We flew Skyservice for my daughter's wedding in Mexico. We did not contact them in advance about the dress because we knew how we were going to transport it. I've written about this before but I'll say it again. I took my daughter's dress down for her. I turned it inside out, put tissue paper between the layers to prevent the beads from catching on anything, folded it up and put it in a small rolling carryon suitcase. It was so easy to transport, through the airport, through security, on the plane, no problem. There were other brides on our flight and no closet so everything was in the overhead bins. Once I got to our hotel I took the dress out and spread it out in my closet (we arrived Friday for a Wednesday wedding). It was fine, no steaming required.

I know this probably won't work for all types of dresses but it honestly was the best way. I've seen brides struggling with dresses in the airport since then, carrying them around on a hanger in a big bag trying to keep them off the floor. The small carryon was so easy! No one even knew it was the dress! Also the groom did not want to see the dress or know anything about it so this was a good way to keep it completely hidden from him.

Yes, I have flown Transat Last time I went to Mexico, three years ago, we flew with them. That would be awesome if you could pm me when you get back to let me know how it went with your dress on the plane and everything.

I hadn't read this before from you and I never would have thought of it.

I really don't think it'll work in my case, but I do think that it won't be easy to be carrying it around on a hanger.
When I get it back from the seamstress I'll see how much I can fold it into a carry on. I think that would definitely be the easiest way.

My dress has a huge poofy bottom with tons of tulle. That's the part that may or may not be easy to fold. But I'll try it out!

My dress is pretty poufy at the bottom too, one idea my seamstress had that I forgot to share is one of those suit bags that you vacuum the air out of. We might try it on my dress just to see how it goes

Just thought I'd throw in a suggestion:-)

I bought and packed a hand-held garment steamer and took it in my luggage...

The bridal salon where I bought my dress actually suggested it.

I got a Conair one for about $35/$40 and I'd say if you're really worried about your dress being wrinkled and your resort not having the ability to steam/iron, this is a great way to go!

It worked really well. (Although I did end up having my dress steamed at the resort...but I tested it out!:-))

 

You can probably get them at most big drug stores or Target, Walmart, Bed, Bath & Beyond etc...

(I'm in western Canada and got mine at London Drugs.)

 

Also, for any girls flying Continental, this is the airline I flew.

A heads-up... even if the flight attendants allow you to put your dress in the first-class closet... it's only a half-size closet!! I was on four different Continental planes (b/c of transfers there and back etc) and ALL of them had the same half-size closet! So, the girl tried to fold my dress in half and cram it in there...

I decided to put it in the overhead bin and just politely ask people not to put their suitcases on top it:-)

 

Also, if you ask NICELY at the counter at the departure gate, they'll usually let you on first with the elderly and children to put it in an overhead bin above your seat:-)

Wow, those are some great ideas! I think i'm going to look into getting one of those little hand held steamers in case the bridesmaids also need it for their dresses!
