Packing Gown for Airplane

I'm sure there are other posts on this topic, but I did a search and nothing came up! Sorry!

 

How did you pack your gown for the plane? Mine currently does not have any stuffing at all. It's just hanging on a hanger in the garment bag. Did you have your dress packed with tissue paper and such to take it on the plane?

 

I just called American Airlines to tell them I would be carrying on a dress. (I was told that if you called them ahead of time they would be very accommodating and let you hang it in the closet.) They told me I need to be prepared to ROLL IT UP and put it in the overhead bin. WTF?!?

 

We put in an upgrade request, so hopefully we'll get first class, but holy cow I can't imagine rolling up my dress!!!

 

How did you guys handle this?

I haven't dealt with this yet, but have you considered shipping it there ahead of time via UPS, Purolator, etc..?

Roll it up? Seriously? The worse part about that is I can totally see the airlines saying that.

 

From what Ive heard, once those doors close and your on the flight, the flight attendants can accomodate you in any way they want. I would think that they would put the dress in the closet for you, heck may even upgrade you if there is space.

 

But I know how nerve wrecking it could be to rely on that!

I've been worrying abuot this too. I have heard from many people that if you just ask them to put it in their closet, they will.

I've also heard it's prudent to call ahead of time.

 

My fear is that if I call ahead of time, they can pull the whole "it's against the rules" card and not be nice...

 

I hope so badly that we have nice flight attendants and they have room and that there aren't 4 other brides on the plane!

 

I will be so upset if I have to roll mine up and stuff it into the overhead bin. It's way too big for that.

I've been a little worried about this too!

 

From what I've read and heard (from my TA and others) is that it's up to the staff on the day you fly...

Depending on the airline, calling ahead may or may not help...

Basically, if they're nice, they'll hang it in a closet for you...but apparently that "closet space" is for the first class passengers (so if you're flying first class, shouldn't be a problem...but I think most of us are flying economy...)...and if there's room left, they'll put it in there...

Otherwise, you have to shove it in the overhead bin

 

We're flying Continental...and I called a couple weeks ago to ask about it.

The woman on the phone sounded like she could have given a rat's ass about where I store my dress on the plane and basically said, just see what they say when you show up. Grrrreat!:-)

 

Packing it with tissue sounds like a good idea too....

I called Delta about this and their policy is that the dress has to fit their carry on baggage requirements. If it doesn't, it can't come on the plane. That is their official policy, but I'm hoping the flight attendants will be more accomodating.

girls im just really curious....why does it matter if you have to put your dress in the overheard if the resorts steam the dress anyways?? im not being mean i just dont get how it will do anything other than wrinkle it which the steaming will fix....

I spoke to my TA about bringing my dress on board too. She gave me the dimensions that the airline has for these kinds of things and told me that they will probably ask me to put it in the overhead compartment My TA also said that it might be possible that they will decide to store it in the flight attendants closet if they feel like it. The basic impression I got was that it is totally up to them.

Michelle - I don't even know if there will be a steamer at my resort. It's not a big all-inclusive one. I don't even know if they have irons and ironing boards in the rooms! It doesn't have tv's!
I'll definitely email my WC and ask her if they have a steaming machine and if they can do that for my dress.

I was just thinking that if I could get it to Mexico with a minimal amount of wrinkles I could just hang it up in the shower and run the shower. Then again, it's a pretty freaking crazy dress, so maybe I'll need it professionally steamed.

yaa i would definately ask about getting it steamed...my stepmom folded her dress up in a carry on bag (and it was a big dress) and we were on a plane for 12 hours so it was not just a short flight and she just brought it to a bridal store (we didnt stay at a resort either) and they steamed it for her and it looked perfect after it will probably be alot better than getting stressed about whether the flight attendants will be nice about it or not KWIM?
