Dog owners: help please with wee-wee pads?

We're getting a new puppy and have been told to get her wee-wee pads with a frame for those times that we aren't home. The breeder says "anything will work", but I'm guessing there are some that are better than others.

 

The frame has been especially hard to locate (unless you want one that is about 5"x5" which I'm thinking is way too small).

 

Anyone have any suggestions?

When we got our dog, we just got a box from the pet store. I can't remember the brand but, it was pretty generic (whatever was on sale) and they worked great!

 

What do you mean by frame? Like a play-pen type of thing?

I haven't ever used a frame.... I just always went to the pet store and bought whatever they had. They all worked great.

We didn't use these. We also had the advantage of FI working shift work so he was around most of the days when I was at work. Then the days we were both gone (5 out of 35) we had our upstairs neighbour let Killick out. Are you crate training?? If you are, make sure you get one that has a divider so that it can be smaller for now and can be made bigger when she gets bigger and potty trained. Killick can hold "it" all day now if we are both working. And he never once "went" in his crate. I am a huge fan of crate training!! (but of course we called it his bed!)

Anyway...back to topic! If you both are gone all day long, and you have no one to let her out, then I guess using the pads will work - DO NOT use newspaper!!! It can really stain your floors!!

Hey Becks! I have a puppy and we always have pee pee pads down for her when we are home and out. I brought one of those frames and ended up tossing it! I buy the pee pee pads from Walmart and they are like 30 for 6bucks or so. I used to get them at PetSmart but they are soo expensive 50 for like 30bucks and even they leak sometimes. I went to HomeDepot/Lowes and got about 3 feet of that plastic material like a rug runner? and I put it under the pee pee pad, BEST thing I have EVER done! hope this helps!

I agreee...don't waste your money on the frame :-) And I also agree that Crate training is a life savor!! If all goes well...yr doggy will love his crate and even go in there to sleep when you home.

We used the Wee-Wee pads at night...He slept in bed with us (still does now :-) and when he woke up in the middle of the night I would take him to the pad, he would Pee and come right back to bed.

I have a small little girl- she's full grown 3-4lbs. Anyways, we don't use the frame because she won't go on it with the frame in place. I even tried buying one of the little bin type thingies that had an areas cut out where she could step inside. Nope- would just pee right next to it.

 

I went to home depot and got a large peice of fiber glass and keep the pad on it. It works really well and if there is a case of mis-aim (which happens a lot with my dog) it doesn't leak off the side. Plus it's easy to hose off.

Killick doesn't mind his "bed" but will not really go in there voluntarily!! We say "come on Killick, time for bed" or even just "bed" and he goes & hides under the coffee table (although he's starting to get too big for that!) or he'll roll over on his back & play dead!! But while he's in there he's fine! I've even started leaving the door open when we go to bed at night and he's been doing ok with it.

Amanda- maybe try giving him a treat whenever it's time to crate up. You know- kinda associate it as something positive. We totally changed that with our boy dog (we crate him because he has chewing problems) and he totally runs into his crate any time we ask now. He even associates that as his "place".

 

I've even heard putting a blanket over it to make it den like really helps too.
