If theres such thing as a groom-zilla, i'm him

Hi my name is Andres, I'm from the Dominican Republic but have been living with my now fiancee for the past 5 years in Australia.

So after 5 long years of struggle and love as a couple i decided it was time to make an honest woman out of my darling aussie girl. And what better place than where we met Dominican Republic.

We both work in advertising, so she was part of the international marketing team that went to the island for the Panamerican Games in 2003. I was the Designer working with them developing the logos and the fit outs for all the venues. However the first time we met it was so random at La Vega's Carnival, we got drunk kissed. We've been together ever since.

Now that its time to get married, this one will be a bit tricky, because of the cultural differences in terms of whats expected at a wedding.

It's a logistical nightmare, since we're flying more than 30 ppl from the uk, australia, the states and spain. Plus my crazy dominican family.

I must admit, that after seeing some of the pics posted all over the internet, i wasn't sure about Destination Weddings. I'm not sure if i can trust the biggest day of my life to just about any person in a remote part of the D.R.

This is when i turn into the Groom-zilla.

Growing up in the D.R we're spoiled since the natural beauty of our country seems completely natural, thus we expect as a norm for the beaches to be gorgeous and the sun to be shinning yadda yadda. In our minds, what makes or breaks a wedding is 3 things: Fancy Decoration, One of a kind Food (and lots of it), International expensive Alcohol, and Entertaintment. I know i said 3 but i forgot about that last one.

So a simple, table on the sand and 12 chairs scattered around will simply not do. Nor will it be having the hotel's wedding coordinator hanging cds behind the counter. It should be an Event. Something fun, elegant, grand exuberant and above all Tasteful.

My mother wants to have a say but my wife to be is not having it. so im jsut leaving that one alone. My only job is to find and book the perfect hotel. I already found D.R's BEST WEDDING PLANNER. She would put JLo to shame. her name is Carlota Sanlley, she runs Novella.com.do and Novella the Magazine. One of my best friends used her for their wedding and they said it was like a dream where everything you can think of is already taken care of.

So I'll let you know how i go with mine. I'm glad to be here and congratulations to us all. I never knew how much fun is planning a wedding (he says after only being engaged for a week! :P)

cheers

Andres

There's so much to learn on this forum, it's truly brewing with a wealth of information, tips, ideas, etc., that will help make your day a wonderful one. But with that you'll soon discover it also becomes an obsession and like most of us you'll quickly become a forum addict! friday.gif

I love your story, and that you're so determined to make J-Lo envious of your wedding, tee hee. That's sweet and I'm sure your fiancee appreciates that commitment punk.gif

Hi Andres,

Congrats and welcome!

Sounds like your wedding will be quite the international affair! I'm impressed that you have already found a wedding planner. I'm sure your wedding will be incredible.

By the way, I used to live in Australia, and really enjoyed living there. The Aussies are great people!

When is your wedding going to take place?

Best wishes,

Tod

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
