Guest trouble.....

Okay, is anyone else having trouble with guests wanting to attend the wedding but NOT stay at your resort? My future in-laws are really causing a stink about this. The RIU's have a strict policy that 80% or more of the wedding guests must be staying at the resort or the wedding will be canceled. And guests staying off property can only come to the RIU an hour before the wedding and have to leave after dinner. What's the point then?! Just don't come! Urgh- it's really irritating. Am I the only one in this boat?

You are not alone! You'll find so many other brides experience the same problem. I have family members who say the same thing and I keep trying to explain that they will miss out on the fun time we'll all have together the week of the wedding and that they will need to pay to come on the resort, and they won't be able to stay the whole duration.

Hang in there!

Yeah, I am getting married at the RIU Palace RM and I told my travel agent not to book anyone for the other hotels and just act like its the only one they can stay at. Just let the family know that it's your wedding and that it's the RIU's rules and tell them all of the perks of the hotel to persuade them. Hope that helps!

I am going through this right now! Some of my family booked at a hotel in Playa Del Carmen without even talking to us about it first!! They haven't even sent us the RSVP back yet but that's a whole other story... It screws up my plans for the welcome dinner (I'll still have it but they won't be there) and the OOT bags! We won't have very many people attend the wedding so it really sucks that some of the few people that are coming won't even be staying at the same resort!! We picked the Palladium for many reasons but one of them being that we thought it would be cost effective for our guests! And then they go and do this without even mentioning it to us first! I've been pretty upset about it lately!!! I'm sorry you are going through this too!!

I just wish some of my guests would actually stop procrastinating and book already!

We're getting married in May, alot of people have First Holy Communions, some of our guests we've invited haven't found out if its the weekend we leave! And well since we're cruising, they don't have an option of what day they leave on! So as of right now, we have no idea who the FI's BM is going to be still!

Ahhh the blessed in-laws - my FMIL is being a giant pain in the you know what!!! Same issue. At first they offered to pay for FI's daughter as our wedding gift, but forgot to mention the condition attached - that we have the wedding at their time share in Puerto Vallarta!!! We wanted mayan side. Not to mention that although they stay for free and earn points, EVERYONE else and the wedding costs themselves would be a lot more $$$. After making a giant fuss, they are now coming. But honestly, why can't she just keep quiet and go with the flow....like my lovely family?? At the end of the day I am trying to keep calm and remember that it will all work itself out. So try and be calm :)

Sorry you are going through this. Why do you guests want to stay somewhere else. I would explain to those you talk to part of the trip is to spend time with eachother and by staying at another resort they are going to miss some of the best times. Good Luck!!

I've been having the same problem. It's kind of hurtful too, when you went to the trouble to pick a great resort, but I guess it's inevitable.

What gets me is that it's not like we as brides can control where our guests are going to book! And as you said, some people book and don't even tell you! I just found out that my sister's friend booked at our resort (thank god), but he'd done it ages ago and I just found out!

I also just got an email from our WC after we gave her our guest count telling us that 90% have to be guests of our resort. No mention of this was ever made in all our previous emails or in the contract we signed...

Sigh.

I'm sooo sorry that you are going through something like that. I know how in-laws can be. They are the reason I cancelled my first wedding. They were saying that the prices were too high and that they could find a better deal elsewhere. But you know what I have learned to do? I say #$%& them!!! IT helps me alot!!!! I only focus on me and my FI and whoever is going to be there will be there. It is not a bout them. It is about you guys!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
