How long did it take you to get your dress ?

Recommended Posts

Hey girls,

I was wondering how long in average it took you to get your dress ? Here's my dilemma : I'm currently losing weight (lost 16 lbs already... 24 more to go) so I don't want to go out and start trying dresses before I actually get close to my target weight... that could be not before December.

I don't want something very elaborate (I will have a beach wedding so I want something rather simple), but I see that some of you have ordered their dresses already a while ago and it does not get there before January or so.

So, do you think it will still be OK if I start looking in December ? Or should I start now, knowing that I might have more options later on (as the body changes the types of dresses you can wear also changes), or that the dress I would try today would have to be seriously altered if I picked it up now... any advise welcome !

(.... I already have to have my engagement ring resized !!!! frown.gif)

I think you still have some time to play with. My dress was ordered mid August and should be in this weekend, so that's only a little over two months. I know some take longer, but if your wedding isn't until May you could wait til the end of the year and see where you are with your weightloss goal.

I say hold out girl! Congrats on losing weight, what an accomplishment! You can almost always have a dress rushed and if you get a dress in December you should be fine by your date. I only say this cause you're working on 24 more pounds. It's definitely harder to lose the last pounds, but I would wait until you have about 10-15lbs left to lose, cause then you can easily have it altered. I think if you do it now and get it altered you're going to have a new body after 24 pounds and it may not be the right style of dress for your new fabulous body! Good luck!

I am in a similar situation but would advise you to try on dresses that have that "universal" appeal now to a least get the feel for the dress. Yes you will have a new body but I am one to err on the side of caution and order the dress by November and get a really good tailor. That way-picking a beautiful dress that can complement most shapes and sizes would alleviate the nightmare of having something that would look totally different. I too started weight loss for my baby weight and plan to be done with weight loss by December, however, I ordered my dress in my current size and will alter according to weight loss later, as long as I have my dress. Some dress stores not only take a while to get your dress in, but alterations can take a month or two as well. Good Luck. I loved Nicole Miller by the way and is who i went with--awesome, simple and elegant gowns for DW!!

Congrats on the weight loss!

I would go ahead and start shopping now, just to see what is out there and what you like.

My dress took 4 months to come in. I was trying to lose weight and just hadn't found "the one" and it was the end of January before I actually ordered one. I came in early May (2 weeks ahead of schedule) but I still had to pay extra for rush alterations.

Be prepared when you start shopping that wedding dresses typically run 2-3 sizes small. Don't let that discourage your or diminish all of the hard work you've done so far. I'm a 10-12 and my dress was a 16 that had to be cut down.

Congrats on loosing weight. I was in the same boat as you I wanted to loose weight before I ordered my dress since some dresses can only be altered so much. So I found the average dress took about 6 months to come in (mine was 4). So I went dress shoping keeping a open mind that I planned to loose some more weight. When I found my dress it did not fit but I was able to get a idea to know it the perfect dress for me. I put a deposit down on the dress and asked a little more time before they put in the order and they agreed. I did hit one road block by the time I was ready to order the dress they stopped cutting it so I ended up with the sample so just make sure you are able to get your dress ordered before that.

Since I'm on a tight wedding schedule (six months to the day after my engagement), I didn't have the luxury of ordering a dress, so I was trying on samples off the rack for purchase. I've lost 20 lbs in the last six months and was shocked to learn I fit in to a size 8 wedding dress, especially since everyone here has been saying that they usually run smaller than normal sizes (I didn't even know I was back down to single size digits - this goes to show how much I go dress shopping haha). I still would love to lose anywhere from another 10 - 20 lbs with my personal trainer over the next four months before my wedding, that's why I'm glad the dress I chose has a corset closure so that essentially, I'll be able to pull it in if necessary. I'm hoping that if I lose a lot of weight that the dress needs to be taken in significantly that the tailor will be able to do that. I'm a little nervous, but confident still.

Good luck!!

Thank you all for your answers.

I'm going to follow your advise... I guess that I'm going to wait two more weeks which put me on Nov 8 (4-5 additional lbs should be off) and start shopping then. I've already looked a lot over the internet so I have an idea of what I like... I selected some salons and so I also know where to start.

I am itching to go though... itching itching...

Maybe I should just go and that would already allow me to rule out those dresses that would take too much time to come in !

PS : no idea what my US size is anyway (I never really shopped here other than for shirts) so I won't be horrified, I have no benchmark wink.gif

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
