Wedding dress blues

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I need some advice. This weekend I finally started looking for wedding dresses. My wedding is at the end of February 2009, so I know that I am already cutting it very close. I waited so long to go and try out dresses because I was sure that either the salespersons would be rude or the dresses would not fit. I was pleasantly suprised that the salespersons were nice but disappointed in the fact that most of the samples that I liked did not fit. I am a street size 11/12 and to have to go to the stores and try on a 14 or 16 was awful. The majority of shops only had size 10's or 12's. Only David's had a variety of sizes which fit. What made it worst was that some of the other brides in the store were able to easily fit into the smaller sizes and they looked so good. I felt like a beached whale. (This definitely reinforced the fact that I need to go on a serious diet!) The question is how am I supposed to find the perfect dress when I am unable to try on the samples.frown.gif

Many places can still put you into the smaller sizes. Either over your head, and just leaving the back open, or they can pin it to you to get an idea of what it will look like.

My suggestion to you though would be to get your dress made by a local designer. I went through the problem of not finding "the dress" and finally gave up. I'm soooo much happier knowing I'll be getting exactly what I want... and I don't need the designer label to love my dress.

I'm sorry you are feeling frustrated with finding your dress. I think that maybe most people have to try on sizes that don't fit them when they go to bridal shops. I know that I had to either get squeezed in a size too small or get pinned up into size or two bigger.

Maybe try to find a shop that has a more private fitting area, so you can feel comfortable really looking at the dresses you try on. I'm sure you will find 'the one' for you...it may just take some time.

Good luck with everything wink.gif

That's a great idea!
I know it's hard but remember you only do this once in your life and you need to enjoy!

Girl...c'mon! I'm a street size 12W, and had to squeez into MANY a sample gown...don't take it as being a "whale" or not normal some how. Thats not the case at ALL. You are average...period. Don't let anything ruin this experience for you..not many women can walk in off the street and find the perfect sample dress in the perfect size to show them what its actually SUPPOSED to look like. You either pin it in place, or do only a partial zip/lace up. The sales associates are used to that. Most of the sample gowns in the shops I went to carried 12 and under...in the case of a bridal gown, you know those were too small for my hippy ass, but I didn't sweat it. I squeezed in and just did my best to imagine what they would look like a size up ...with correct flow of oxygen to my brain.

I remember the sales girl telling me that this one gown looked good and like the perfect length and since it was a sample, I could get it at a great discount...she then asked me if I could sit down in it, since that would be the test. I just looked at her, rolled my eyes and told her "Sure, I can sit down...but next I'll be laying down when my ass passes out and y'all have to call the paramedics to get me out of here."

Hi this happened to me at David's too! I am no skinny minny, and my dress was hanging open in the back, while there were size 2 girls floating around... Don't worry though, go to a different Davids or try on a different size... My MOH and I went and were kinda silly putting on fur throws and funny things, dancing... you don't have to be a tiny girl! It is frustrating though that in the larger sizes there were only a few decent styles available.

Don't worry about it everyone is a different size and some stores will carry even smaller samples. If the shop is good they will get the dress and and give you the image you need to make your choice. I went to some pretty bad shops, what I ended up doing was searching online for a good bridal shop and it was amazing how they could show you the dress.

I definitely agree with the posts above about finding a good bridal shop. A lot of dresses now have multiple zippers for the various sizes so that whether you are a size 2 or a size 20, it can be zipped up so you can try it on and see how it will look. Keep searching. You will find the one that you will feel is "The One" and don't let people around you make you feel like you are any less beautiful!

I know exactly how you feel. Dress shopping wasn't a fantastic experience for me either because of my size. I'm petite and a street size 10/12. I have a huge chest, and in one desinger, I had to try a 20 to get it to zip.

There were a few dresses I really like that I didn't try on because the sample was too small or too large.

You just need to go and try anything and everything! LOL I agree to take a friend or two to make it fun.

You don't want to wait too long simply because you are uncomfortable. You need to give yourself time to get your dress ordered and altered. You don't want to be scrambling at the end and end up setteling on something that isn't exactly what you want.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
