how much is too much?

Recommended Posts

i know there have been so many posts on budget and cost of DW's, but it seems that every one that i've read is talking about a 7-night stay. i'm planning on a four-night (five-day..ish) stay at a private villa. with airfare it will come to about $1000/person. we're taking care of their food and we're taking them out on a fun "excursion," so essentially they don't have to pay anymore than the $1000/person. does $1000/person sound like a reasonable price or are we asking too much of our guests? thanks for your help! :)

ps: keep in mind we are flying out of southeastern virginia. unfortunately, it's not the cheapest place to fly from!

I think that $1000 is perfectly reasonable when you give your guests some advanced notice to save. We're looking for packages that are $1500 max all inclusive for a week (we're Canadian so flights and everything are included in our packages) which our friends and family are totally fine with.

I agree with Beach Bride, although not everyone may be able to attend, the people who love you the most will find a way. Most of our friends are at the same place in life as we are (young, still in/just out of grad school and broke, ha ha) but we always told them that we would be having a destination wedding even before we got engaged (we've been together for almost 8 years though so they got a heads up a few years ago). Some of our friends have had their "trip money" saved for a few years which is awesome (and shows us how excited they are to be at our wedding!).

Compared to what it is going to cost our guests to join us, $1000 seems very reasonable.

When we first thought of a DW, we had envisioned us and one other couple. That's why we were leaning towards Jamaica and then Sandals - everything would have been taken care of by Sandals and no document translations. We knew that there would be cheaper places to travel but none that seemed as simple for a party totalling 4.

But...since we have mentioned our preliminary plans to other friends and family, it looks like we will have some followers. I didn't really want to ask people to attend but we are now open to the idea of having more friends and family present.

Had we not already had our hearts set on Jamaica and Sandals, we probably would have done more research on cheaper destinations. But these people have 3 years to save their pennies !!

We are too far away to get a good idea of what the actual costs are going to be.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
