I'm so sorry you had to go through this all over again . Kai was so fortunate to have such a loving home. He must have felt so safe and loved that night.

      Sarah,
No they didn't come from the same place. Erabos we got from a lady who found the litter on the side of the road with no mama. The second we got from a kill shelter. They were euthanizing because they had so many. They both are about an hour away from us in different directions.

Gosh Calia... that just stinks. I was hoping you were going to say they were from the same place- or even the same shelter. That would make more sense. I still don't think it's something your older kitty has, I just think it's really bad luck that they both have had an infectious disease.

Wish I could come up with a better solution for you. I'm so sorry you are going through this with your kitties. It's not fair.

Calia -- I"m so sorry to hear what happened. In March we lost our kitten, Latte, to FIP, so I understand, at least a little, where you are coming from.

I could be mistaken, but our vet told us that is nearly impossible to test in advance for FIP -- as nearly all cats have the corona virus and it only "goes bad" in some of them. She also said that without a host the disease dies in 6 weeks (meaning if you don't use your litterbox or other kitty items for 6 weeks the diesel will die off).

Latte grew sick gradually and we spent a lot of time at the vets office trying to find out what was wrong -- we even went to a kitty neurologist. It was no comfort to me, so I don't expect it will be to you, but there is nothing that can be done to cure FIP if that is what the kitty has -- so there was nothing you could do. It didn't make me feel any better at the time -- but knowing now that I did the best I could is sort of comforting.

Your kitty was lucky to have you hold him and comfort him at the end.

I'm so sorry for what you are going through.

I am so sorry to hear about your baby kitty. That is so sad. But your kitty had a good life and lots of love from you while he was here. I had a kitten that had to be put to sleep because of FIP. We had 2 unrelated kittens at that time and it is infectious. They told us to wait 6 months to see if the other one started showing any symptoms before we considered getting another kitten. She never got sick and the other kitty we got later is still here and healthy.

They can do an FIP titer but that just shows whether the cat was exposed to FIP. Could have a false positive.

I hope things start getting better for you soon. You did all you could.

If you can, see if the vet has some way of checking for FIV, it's like the human form of HIV and can get transferred very easily. If that is the case make sure everything in your house is clean and new (especially the litter box) before adopting a new kitten.

Where was the kitten from? He/she may have been sick the whole time. If it was a breeder/shelter/store be sure to let them know.
FIV can only be gotten by cats by drawing blood, so there should be no way that your kitten had FIV (or if he did this is not how they pass away). FIV is the feline form of our HIV and they can live up to 14 years if they are healthy. It kills cats because it wears down their immune systems. There is is FeLuk (Feline Leukemia) which is very easy to transfer but if your current cat had it you'd probably know by now and it doesn't usually act that quickly. (at least if your kitten got it from your current cat, although it doesn't sound likely that either one had it). There is also FIP which can go undetected but no one really truly knows if it transferable or not. It sounds like a poisoning to me. Did your kitten ever try to eat your toothpaste?
