I stayed at the magestic last year in feb. That is where my fiance proposed to me! I loved the resort and everything was amazing! We are having our wedding at grand palladium in jamacia only because we already have been to dominican and wanted to try something new. We both agreed if we weren't going to Jamacia - we would go back to Magestic. I saw quite a few weddings and they looked beautiful!  I believe there is also two sides to the Colonial - and right now i can't seem to think what they are called but from walking around both - i perfered the one we stayed at. The photographs fromt he photographers of the weddings weren't that bad ( i creeped!) I have some resort pics if you need but i'm sure you can find similar ones online.

We only had one complaint the whole time there and it was that the ice machines get shut off at night... Other then that it was great!

I stayed at the Majestic twice (Jan '08, Oct '09), and just came back yesterday from the Grand Palladium.  You won't be disappointed with either hotel.  Personally I prefer the Majestic.

Majestic:

  • Beautiful grounds
  • More colorful and visually appealing resort (blue pool, green grass, beige walkways, terracotta decorations, beige & terracotta colored buildings) - I took tons of pictures here and maybe 6 pictures of the Palladium
  • Gorgeous rooms
  • Better than perfect pool
  • Perfect size
  • Staff spoke great English and interacted with you a lot
  • Better disco

Palladium:

  • Beautiful rooms (almost identical to Majestic just a little smaller)
  • Better food
  • Live Dominican music in at least 3 separate locations (Majestic usually only had jazz and piano live)
  • 2 theaters for entertainment
  • Stay at 1 play at 3 - Very large resort (a bit of a pain for restaurants that are further away)
  • Dull looking resort - all you see are buildings (green, yellow, beige), green grass, and trees.
  • The only benefit to staying at the Royal Suites would be the room - very quiet section with no entertainment.
  • Very few tables of 5+ at the A La Cartes causing a wait of an hour plus as it's first come first serve (buffet no problems)
  • You can make reservations IN PERSON ONLY at 6pm (I don't know if you can make it for days in advance) - a bit of an inconvenience
  • Locals come on the weekend and bring 11 kids with them (staff even commented that the kids act like piranhas)
  • More Europeans (a bit rude and pushed you out of the way with no apologies)
  • Staff socialized mostly with the Europeans who spoke Spanish

I didn't find any downfalls to the Majestic but could find downfalls to the Palladium.

My FI were going back between these two, as well. We're getting married at the Grand Palladium in April 2011. Honestly, our first choice was the Majestic initially and I have no doubt that it's an amazing, beautiful hotel and I've heard great reviews but two things swayed us to the GP: price and activities/nightlife. We were not comfortable asking our guests to pay $1800+ to go the majestic when for the same dates they could pay $400 less at the GP for an equally great hotel. Also, the GP is reputed to have more going on in terms of activities, music, shows, etc. and we have a very lively group so I think they might have been more easily bored at night the Majestic.

Oh and just a little more detail regarding the post above concerning the a la carte's at the GP. If you stay at the Grand Palladium Bavaro as part of the Imperial Club (pretty sure ALL rooms on the Bavaro side are Imperial Club but they make it sound prestigious, lol), you CAN make reservations days ahead at the a la carte's but guests not in the Bavaro/Imperial Club cannot...so NO waiting in line, which I am definitely looking forward to as part of my package :)

Goodluck with your decision!

Thanks for the reply Shannon!  We were in the Punta Cana Section.  I'm pretty sure you could make reservations days in advance (we just didn't look into it), and I don't see why not?  We took a look through the room categories in the Bavaro section and the basic rooms were identical to the ones in the PC section (in case anyone was wondering).

GP does have better and a lot more entertainment at night than the Majestic.  The Majestic had the piano bar, the garden bar (where they played Jazz), and then from 10-11 the theater.  I loved that the GP was playing local music like Merengue, Bachata, and Salsa (plus they all had singers, the majestic didn't).  Then the Disco opened up from 11-2 (Majestic was 11-4 or 6am I believe?).

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
