Local Sayings? What are yours?

"What kind of coke do you want?" OMG I am laughing so hard that is hilarious and I absolutely love it.

 

We definitely call it pop, I am fairly certain Canadians do not call it soda. But I am totally calling it coke all the way from now on.

 

We also use the hella phrase. It has been mainsteam here for awhile. Mostly in the context of "this is hella lame" I swear it originated from Southpark though because I caught an episode once and the characters would say that.

 

In Toronto where I live, people are from ALL over. So there isn't really any particular sayings. It is a serious mix and one person says one thing, and others something completely different I have noticed.

What do you call the remote control?

 

In my life I've heard: clicker, changer, zapper, and of course remote....

 

Can anyone add to these?

i call it a remote. my grandfather (and lately my dad) used to call it a clicker - or, b/c he was from the bronx, a "clicka"

my mom and aunts are from brooklyn and they all say "soder" and "seltza" rather than soda and seltzer.
the one that kills me up here in north jersey is when people say they're going "down the shore". "i'm going down the shore this weekend." i grew up at "the shore" and we say "i'm going to the beach".

some of my family members say "tall" for towel and they swear that "apast" is a word. as is "go down apast the red light and turn left."

where i am orginally from, central PA, we also say rumm and blumm for room and bloom. i never knew that it was wrong until i went to college. oh, and i say toasted cheese for grilled cheese and everyone makes fun of me.

As for the remote control, we call it the remote or the clicker, but for several years when my sister was little, she would always call it a 'mocom-a-troll'. Every once in awhile you will hear someone in the family refer to it as that for comical reasons.

Our remote is the clicker.

 

I think I might be a little crazy, but my friends and I tend to name inanimate objects (cars, furniture, etc...) So, we call the remote "clicky". As in "What did you do with Clicky? I can't believe you lost him again!"

I also love regional cuss words! Some of the ones you hear around here are even funnier because of the accent. Most of these are from older people, but I can't help but giggle every time!

 

My favorites are "Shit Fire!" courtesy of BM's grandma "Well Hell's Bells!" and "Tarnation!" I don't know what tar-nation is but her typical usage is "what in tarnation is goin' on over there?" Oh, and Dag-Nabbit. I'm sure they are all ways of not saying GD.

 

She also always said "Icebox" or "Frigidaire" instead of fridge or refrigerator

I actually just had this convo with some guys in the office. In the south we call salsa, "hot sauce", but up here "hot sauce" refers to Tabasco. Hmmmm... it's all hot to me

I think "hot sauce" as salsa is a Texas thing. My MOH is from Amarillo and we stayed with her family one summer. I noticed the hot sauce thing!

 

Here and in the deep south it refers to Tabasco.

OMG ErinB, WAY too funny! I am going to attempt to use "What in tarnation are you doing?" here at work today. See what kind of result I get with that!

 

I call it a "remote" but my FI calls it a "commander". He is from Calgary so maybe that is how they say it out there? Can anyone confirm?

 

I have since converted him into calling it a remote. I agree though it probably varies by household. Now that I think about it, I remember when I was really little, we had this old tv, and the "remote" plugged in, and it was HUGE...I swear it was the size of a standard computer keyboard. And you pushed the buttons down and they stayed down. (Totally had to use 2 hands) So you couldn't exactly flip channels. I wonder if those things were called something different.
