Chocolate Brides: Hair Question

Recommended Posts

My stylist is going to texturize, trim, and color my hair a week before my wedding. I have an appointment at the resort's salon the day of my wedding for an updo style. I plan to take my own products for the resort staff to use. I have not decided on the updo style, but I do not plan to add hair....too hot and I would like to keep it simple.

I made sure to comb the sections of hair row by row as they were undone and got them tangle free. It was fine when the water hit it (if not a little smelly lol) but the second the shampoo hit my hair- OMG did it tangle and mat! (and no, they didn't get better with conditioner)

It took two hours of tearful, painful, snatching at my hair with a pick and wide toothed comb to detangle it. I must've lost two huge handfuls (literally) of hair. I lost at least an inch to two in length.

Worse, when I woke up the next day (I slept with it up in a bun) and tried to take it down it was all tangled and matted AGAIN! So, I had to repeat the process....

This was my first exposure to having a sew in. What did I do wrong? Is this what I can expect every time I take down my extensions? I mean, my hair GREW in it- but if I'm going to have to snatch myself bald for days and days afterwards- is it worth it??

Help!

It took me 2 1/2 days to take all the braids out in early September. I was exhausted when I finally got them out, put a hair cap on and went to bed. The next morning I decided I wanted to wash my hair. BIG MISTAKE! It became so matted that I called a salon that I had an appt for the next day and asked for advice. I was near tears because I thought I would have to get it cut off, it was so tangled! My sister came over with a detangler and worked a little at a time. The next day the hairdresser cut off 3 inches (she wanted to cut more). My hair is still in recovery and has not been the same.
I will never get micros again. It's just not worth it!
Good Luck and make sure you get plenty of deep conditioning and treatments to help your hair recover nicely.
Oh wow, sorry to hear about your experiences. I recently took down my braids that I had worn for about 3 months (slightly larger than micro). Having had braids before, I knew it would take forever to take them down and that I would get a lot of shedding since the natural hair does not shed while it is in braids. I combed my hair out in small sections after taking out a few braids to get the tangles out. It's important to do it in small sections, because you will just pull your hair out trying to do it in larger sections. After I got all of the braids down and most of the tangles out, I washed my hair several times and then did a really good conditioner. My mom pressed my hair for me to hold me over for a few days until I was able to get my hair relaxed. I had very little breakage and the hair dresser did not have to trim off much of my hair after it was relaxed.

If you are going to get you hair braided again, maybe don't wear the braids as long and do a really good conditioning treatment after taking the braids down.

Oh, forgot to mention, that I did wash my hair/braids several times over the 3months with braid shampoo (that may have helped my natural hair) and kept my scalp/hair moisturized with braid/scalp spray. I also noticed some "take-down spray" in the beauty supply stores that is supposed to make taking down braids easier, but I never tried it out so I can't say if it works or not. I hope you have a much better experience next time you have braids (if you decide to go that route again). I know I will definitely be doing some kind of sew-in or braids for my wedding. I don't want to have to worry about maintaining my own hair since I know it will not cooperate in the heat and humidity.

I'm so glad I found this thread. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my hair and I need help!

Here's the background: I usually relax my hair, never weaved it (the last I did this was for prom, and that came out immediately). And I haven't worn extensions like that. The last time it was in cornrows about five years ago. Needless to say, I'm fairly new to all the different ways to style hair I've read here (like lace front weaves, etc.). In addition to all that, I don't really trust hairdressers like that. I've had bad experiences with them over the years. So I'm the one who regularly washes and flat irons my hair.

For the wedding, I fell in love with the side ponytail style. My hair falls a couple inches below my shoulders but I know I will still need extensions for that full look. I heard a lot about clip-on extensions and thought that would be good to use since I wouldn't have to sew or glue it in. What do you think about this? What products do you think will be helpful?

I'm planning going to the hairdresser who normally relaxes my hair (that's all I make her do). Should I show her pictures and ask her what she thinks?

I would suggest you go to your normal hairdresser and take the picture. If you have it done right before you got your stylist should be able to tell you what to do to maintain it. And if you take her the picture she should be able to tell you what type of hair you will need to get the style you want.

Pandabride6 - I was at our resort in October and I am happy to tell you that all of the staff in the salon are black girls too. I am newly natural and one girl was telling me all about cute twisted styles for the wedding. There are both natural and relax sisters in the salon, I think you will be fine if you bring a picture of what you want and what ever products you tried and trust. If you are worried, I would schedule a trial a couple days before to have time to try a few styles just to be sure...but I'm sure you'll be fine.

This plan is my back up if my stylist doesn't make it down...and if my hair doesn't grow out some, I'll really have a challenge on my head!

Good luck, but i'm sure you'll look beauiful!

Tauristar- Thanks for the reassurance. I think I'll first do what daniepps suggested and go to my hairdresser and find out what I'll need to do at home (get extensions, etc.). Then, I'll set up a trial at the salon once I get down to JA and show them the style I want.

My cousin actually lives in JA and is originally from MoBay. I asked her for a recommendation too and she said she may know a place. So we'll see... hopefully I can pass that info on to fellow brides also.

Who knew hair care would become such an issue? lol.

Again this thread really has put me at ease, but knowing that another chocolate bride (Sensatori Bride) got married at my resort had no worries has helped me alot. I take good care of my hair so I know I can style my own hair the days leading up to and after my wedding, I was just worried about my wedding day but not anymore. Thanks ladies

Ladies can I just say (if I haven't already lol) that my hair was so not important to me on my day. I was so drunk the night before the wedding (Yay Puerto Rico) that my MOH and BM literally put my curlers in my hair at around 2 am and they used Lotta Body which never dried bc I was up at like seven. So I had curls that lasted maybe 2 days but they were actually loose like I like them. Then one of my LS's just pulled the front of my hair back and tied it I think as she was putting my blusher on me. I didn't even think anything of it and IMO it turned out great.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
