We just can't agree on a dog!

I agree with Jenn that you should check out your local shelter. There may be a dog there that you both fall in love with and you can also save a life!!

What about a Boston Terrier, their like minature boxers.. :-) I would also suggest rescue, since you'll know the temperament of the dog and know if your getting a hyper one or a moderate.

Bostons are the best dogs, i'm bias of course. But they are usually a good mix, cuddly, playful (when they are in the mood), and adorable.

Puggles - pugs mixed beagles, are very active dogs and can be hyper.

 

Try reading about breeds, there are lots of various books and mags, or of course the internet.

 

And make sure you buy from a reputable breeder if you are buying a purebred... do lots of research before you buy from a breeder (research the breeds and most important research the breeder)... there are a lot of bad breeders out there, and if you don't know, you might be in for disappointment. Reputable breeders try to improve the lines, get very thorough testing (eyes, hips, etc - not just vet checks and shots), will interview you, etc.

 

Otherwise check your local animal shelter for a great pet... lots of mixed breeds and purebreds there too.

They are very loyal and intelligent dogs. I just got mine a month ago (3 months old now). We tried adopting from our local shelter but they treated us like criminals. We couldn't see the dog, we had to fill out paperwork, then if we were acceptable parents they would let us see the dog and pay to take him home if we liked him. We ended up driving 4 hours to get him from a small breeder (breeds once every 2 years) to get our puppy.

 

Puppy is sitting on my lap making sure I have a clean screen, he's a cuddle/lick monster!!!!

Emphasis on the "can be" above. My puggle is 2 and he sleeps for about 22 hours a day, seriously! He is really lazy most of the time but we do need to take him for a walk or let him run around the park everday to exert some energy. But really you should be doing that with any breed of dog...they all need ways to stay healthy and get rid of pent up energy from sleeping inside all day. He does get hyper when people come over to visit though because he LOVES people and loves other dogs. He is the cuddliest dog I've ever seen though, which really outweighs any negatives from him being hyper here and there.

Also note that because it's a mix, one puggle can be very different from the next. My brother and his wife also have a puggle and he's quite different from ours in so many ways! He is not hyper at ALL! So you never are guaranteed what you're going to get. But I think the "hyperness" you hear about is just typical puppy energy and they grow out of it just like every other dog does.

Thats what I try telling my FI! All dogs are different, especially the mix breeds. I actually took him to see a puggle at a local dog store (dont worry I wasnt buying a dog there, I just wanted to "browse") We took the puggle into the gated area where you can play with the dog. I was trying to prove my point how cute and mellow the dog was.....except the dog had a different agenda. It started running around crazy (like so fast he was sliding into the walls) then ran up to my FI and starting biting his jeans at the bottom. He was growling, and running and TOTALLY RUINING MY POINT! I then went with the idea that he was just a puppy and was excited that people were playing with him. Needless to say, my little plan didnt go so well. I will keep trying. I hate when he doesnt give in to me. I am such a brat!

I have a beagle who is almost 1 and a half. I heard so many bad things about beagles (hard to train, stubborn, etc) but at least the most important thing was good, very friendly and never aggressive. Anyways, so I finally gave in and our beagle is awesome. He was trained fairly quickly. By the time he was about 9 months he had calmed down so so much! Now he is 1 year 4 months and he is so calm. Sleeps like 22 hours a day. The only remaining problems we have with him are that (1) he still destroys stuff around the house (not all the time, but once in a while). We have to keep him in the entrance (using baby-gates) when we are not home (we didn't want to crate him, even though I know many people think it's a good thing). The second bad thing is that he jumps on the table for food, and bothers us when we eating on the couch.

 

so he's not perfectly well behaved, but in generally pretty good. Really, what amazes me the most though is how calm he is. Many people think he is much older than he is. He can be hyper and playful sometimes, but generally it's when we get him going.

I agree with the rescue idea....never know what you may find there. How about a Dalmatian!?!
