Can anyone give me thoughts on the resort photographer?

We will be going for the ultimate package .. So pics and video is included , do they just take pictures at the ceremony? I'm sure I want a beach ceremony but if decide a terrace ceremony , can you go to beach for pictures?

I wish I had found this in forum in November - save myself a couple of months of sleepless nights lol.

The resort photographer was ok. I am super crazy with pictures though and the package that is included def. wouldn't have been enough for me so thankfully I hired an outside photographer. With the resort photographer, you get 50 printed photos and an album, after that, each photo is $20 bucks. You can choose to use their full services for an extra fee but to be honest, if you are going to do that, I would just do your research and hire someone else that does a better job. They will def. take you to the beach for pictures no matter where you do your ceremony...we were all over the place. If you do a symbolic ceremony, you don't have to be there any specific number of days before your wedding, just enough time to meet with your vendors if you need to and the wedding coordinator.

Thanks so much rootkl! ... Pics are important to me too , I'm just finding it hard justifying the extra costs then outside vendor fee .. It's sooo stressful. ! ... Good to know about the symbolic ceremony ...

 I am super new here. Getting married on April 12.  Cant wait!!

 

Have a few questions......we will have 21 in our group. We will be eating dinner every night together. How does dinner work? do we have to have reservations or is it a first come first serve?

I know they can reserve space in the buffet but I don't want to eat there every night.

 

 

Also is there a place to dance there? We are not having a reception. Having a big one when we get back. So just plan on having dinner at the resort.

Is there a club or something?

Dinner with 21 every night is going to be challenging. The specialty restaurants are pretty small and to reserve them, I think it's around $800 dollars...we tried to do dinner with a group of around 30 the 1st night at the Italian place and we split up the tables, it was necessary, into groups of 4, 3, etc. and it still took over 2 hours to get everyone seated. If you really want to eat together with everyone every night, I would plan on the buffet. If not, just have everyone have their own dinners and then meet at the bar afterwards for the nightly entertainment to gather everyone together.

 

There is a discoteca. It is the lobby of the french and asian restaurants, a bit sketchy. The nightly entertainment does feature a DJ some evenings though.

i just got all of my stuff to choose our wedding details! I am wondering if anyone has bought the centerpieces and what are the sizes? Also about bridesmaid bouquets... I dont like any of the 4 listed, I am wondering what everyone did for those? Did you send pictures in or something?

Also did anyone have their reception at the rectanugalr pool? Is there any lighting there??

Also where is the best place for cocktail hour? Do you need to rent tables and chairs??

I got the CI-006 centerpieces. They were small. I will try to attach a photo for reference.

 

 

Instead of the bouquets, we did wrist corsages. I liked them, but I am not very picky about flowers.

 

Our reception was at the dolphin pool, mainly because I wanted to have paper lanterns and there is nowhere to hang them at the rectangular pool, but I did see one reception at the rectangular pool during my stay and it looked very nice. They had some luminaries and, I believe, air star balloons. The pool itself is lit up, and there are some spotlights around it, but if your reception is at either of the pools or on the beach, IMHO, it is a very good idea to get some extra lighting.

 

I missed the entire cocktail hour because we were taking pictures then, but ours was on the lobby terrace. I didn't even realize there were other options. The feedback I got was that it was nice but kind of a far walk from our ceremony site (beach) and the reception (dolphin pool).

I got married at Dreams Tulum earlier this week. I'm also a hobbyist photographer (and have done some weddings). We hired an outside photographer for getting ready, ceremony, and shots of us & family/friends immediately following the ceremony on the beach. Since our Dreams wedding package included the Dreams photographer, we had him take pictures of the cake cutting & reception for an hour. Here's my feedback:

 

- The photographer was charismatic and outgoing and good at getting pictures of all of our guests. During the cake cutting he also took the initiative to have us pose and do a couple silly things that made for fun pictures.

- He had a good sense for lighting with his bounce flash, but didn't use an umbrella flash or remote flash which I thought was a bit disappointing. As expected, in the final shots many people had shiny looking foreheads and gloomy black backgrounds. This would not be a problem during the day, but a dark reception should always have remote flashes IMO.

-He had a good sense for posing and creating flattering angles. This is probably the most important factor in a wedding photographer.

-The day after our wedding we narrowed about 120 pictures down to the 50 we liked (we ended up at 52 after the first pass through of "remove or keep" which the photoshop guy said was close enough to 50).

- The pictures we had to choose from lacked basic digital editing (there were problems with brightness/contrast/white balance). After getting home from Mexico yesterday I popped the CD in and in about an hour had corrected this, removed some pimples/blemishes, removed shine from some foreheads, increased detail of black clothing, lightened some of the backgrounds, etc. 

- About 5 of the 50 prints were unacceptable without digital edits, and another 10 were just a bit disappointing. It's a bit surreal someone at dreams doesn't at least do a 10 second per picture digital editing job before making the prints.

 

My Conclusions:

-If you want many pictures and a wedding book, use an outside photographer.

-If you use only the resort photographer, plan to do some digital editing on your own. Don't put much value on the prints you will receive, just print them on your own.

-For everyone with a package that includes the Dreams photographer: At a minimum I'd suggest downloading Google Picasa (free software) and see if you like the picture more after applying the "I'm Feeling Lucky" filter to each pic. There is also a fairly easy to use blemish reducer/remover in Picasa. For pictures taken after the sun is down, you will likely want to find someone who knows how to work Photoshop and can dodge/burn the picture.

Please help! - I'm struggling to know which place to choose for the reception. I will have about 35 guests and maybe 4 tables. My main concern is privacy. I'd love to be on the beach, but am worried how the dj and dance will be set up as I don't want to go for the dance floor. Any thoughts from previous tulum brides would be much appreciated!

 

Groom here who was only loosely involved with the planning - our wedding was 3 days ago. We had 39 people including us (4 tables) near the dolphin pool and there were not any privacy issues (just an occasional couple that would walk by in the distance). Assuming it's in the evening, I don't think any of the reception areas have privacy problems. I saw a cocktail hour or reception on the beach near the seaside grill in the mid afternoon that looked kind of like a spectacle though (too many beach goers within a 500 foot radius IMO).

 

I think the thing to keep in mind is that around dinner time or as the sun is setting, guests are either in restaurant/bars or at their room... very few on the beach or just walking the resort. Most people are in the sun all day and even the wild ex frat looking dudes seem to lose rather than gain steam.
