Where should I go? Travel advice.

Recommended Posts

I have about a week off from DW's in January and don't want to come back to the snow here in Montreal.

I'll be in the DR and then going back to the DR the following week.

My question to all of you is: where should I go? (I'm thinking either somewhere else in the Caribbean or somewhere in South America)

No resorts, somewhere I can take photos and explore.

This has been on my mind for months! Thanks for the help.

If you only have a week off, I would suggest going to Antigua city in Guatemala. It's such an amazing little town with tons of history, colourful old buildings, and just a lot of charm. From there, you can do little day trips such as hiking up the volcano, or just go exploring. You'll have to be careful though, if you go too far off the beaten path by yourself, muggings are common. You just have to be careful and use common sense, as anywhere else.

South America is amazing too, but I think you need a bit more time to explore that area. Plus, flying between South and Central America can be quite pricey. One of my favourite places is Colonia in Uruguay - so so beautiful with all their old architecture. It is actually similiar to Antigua city. I have been to several countries in South America (Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Chile), so if you do decide to go there, let me know if you have any questions.

I'm sure you'll have a great time anywhere you go, and I would love to see your pictures when you return!

Mexico City is also very interesting. I really loved that place too. There are lots of old interesting parts of the city, but then there is also the modern business centre, which is cool to see too. It was definately not what I expected (in a good way!)

One of my favourite places in Mexico is Oaxaca. It is also an old town with lots of history and lots of very interesting Spanish architecture. I really fell in love with this town. If you go there, I can recommend a small family run resort up in the hills. There is a great view, it's cheap (I think less than $50 per night) but very nice and newly built. Plus the best part is the family. They totally take care of you and hang out with you, take you out, etc. They were really good people to hang out with, just like old friends. It's great if you're travelling alone because you get to meet most of the guests there too. There are ruins nearby to go visit, and you can visit the places where they make mezcal (it's like tequila), and they are famous for their Oaxacan cheese which is incredible!

Oh I am so excited for you that you get to choose a great place to go!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
