How do you store your jewelry?

I am in desperate need of organization with my jewelry. I want to get one of those big mahagony jewery things. Thought I would get some advice from you girls. What do you use or suggest?

As a going away present from one of my nanny employers they gave me an EXPENSIVE wood jewelry box. It's beautiful and has an antique key to lock it. I use it to organize (use this loosely) my jewelry. I have no idea who made it though or where to buy it. She told me every girl needs a GOOD long lasting jewelry box. I love it.

My jewellery box, cream leather, velvet lined, was my wedding present from my husband nearly 27 years ago. It's not nearly big enough anymore as I keep all kinds of keepsakes in it now (including 'baby' teeth, letters to the tooth fairy) but I'd never get rid of it.

I was given a huge jewelry box as a birthday present once, it sounds similar to the one Calia mentioned. It works for me!

You know those little stands that people use for face cloths in their bathroom, they are great for organizing necklaces and bracelets. You can hang them so that you can see what you have and they won't tangle.

I own a vintage jewelry store and I can tell you that it is important to store your jewelry correctly if you want to make it last as long as possible. I can't tell you what horrible things I've seen happen to lovely pieces that were stored incorrectly.

 

Here are some great jewelry storage tips:

•Those large wood free-standing jewelry boxes are great, but I think the best thing is antique apothecary chests. These awesome pieces of old furniture are full of small drawers and come in a variety of sizes. They have small ones that will fit on table tops as well as free standing ones. Just line the drawers with velvet or felt and you are all set. Search your local antique malls ,Craigslist, etc and I’m sure you’ll find a great one.

•Place silica gel packs (those “do not eat†packets in shoe boxes) in the drawers to prevent humidity damage…especially important in rhinestone and sterling pieces.

•DO NOT store your jewelry in ziplocks. It will trap moister in and damage the jewelry over time. Organza bags are what I use and can be bought in bulk on EBay for cheap.

•Place your jewelry box in an area far from the bathroom. I cringe when I see someone who has a jewelry box in the bathroom.

•An old frame with the glass removed makes a great earring display. Just line the frame with window screen material where the glass was and thread earrings through the mesh. Looks great on your dresser.

•Your jewelry should be the last thing you put on before you leave the house. Hairsprays, makeup, perfume, etc are all bad for jewelry…of all kinds. I always tell my customers to put their “lotions and potions†on first.

I have a jewelry box! it is really cool - I bought a hand-carved wood box from an estate sale about 10 years ago - is is from China and a couple hundred years ago - i always wanted to make it into a jewelry box - finally about 2 years ago FI had his Pop-Pop (he has a carpenter's shop in his basement) make custom wood boxes of different sizes for the inside and cover them all in beautiful red velvet. not only do i have a cool jewelry box now but it has so much meaning!!

Thanks for the tips! I do store my jewelry in one of those wooden boxes... mmm going to have to do something about this.
