Anyone who just did a non legal ceremony?

Hi,

I am pretty sure that we are going to get married here first and do a non legal ceremony in Mexico. Does anyone know if they still require you to be there a certain amount of time before the wedding? Also if anyone did do just a symbolic ceremony what did the minister do and did you add anything to the ceremony, like readings or a sand ceremony? Thanks for everyones help.

Hi JGGM,

We did that exact same thing. Got married at the city court the week before our wedding in Mexico so that we didn't have to worry about legalities. No residency period, no blood tests, no paperwork Cheaper wedding. For the $50 we spent on the license and ceremony at home we saved at least a $300 on the Mexico part. I wanted to incorporate a Sand Ceremony but my wedding coordinator was a tool so I just did that myself at the reception.

I plan to get the legal part in NC and then just have a symbolic ceremony once we get to DR. We are still going a few days prior, but just because we want to get everything set before our guests arrive, and they are all coming 2 days prior to the wedding.

We had a mayan ceremony and then made our friend a legal officiant. He signed our certificate that we sent in to the state for legality.

I had considered getting married legally in Mexico but someone mentioned that if you got married in Mexico, they can divorce you in Mexico as well. I didn't do the research to follow up on that, but it scared me enough to not play with it.

My TA told me that for non legal the requirement is 2 days, whereas a legal ceremony is 4 days. That does not include Saturdays,Sundays, or holidays I think. Hope this helps!

Normally you do not have to be here in advance and need just your complete names. It depends on the officiant if you can exchanges your vows or add some symbolic items like sand ceremony, unity candles or others.

I suggest to ask directly to the officiant how much time you have to do it.
