Do you like what you do for a living?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I got into a discussion about careers and life this weekend with a friend and she made a point to tell me how lucky I am that I never really hated my job and didn't "sell out" so to speak...

A little background on me... I was an actress for years (lots of NY theatre and small parts on tv/film/commercials) until I was no longer happy and satisfied with that lifestyle. I did some soul searching and have been transitioning into my soon to be career as a drama therapist which is a perfect fit for me.

So... Do you like what you do for a living? and if not what would be your dream job?

What a good question.

Long ago, a good friend told me that the key to success was finding something you love to do so much you'd be willing to do it for free -- but you do so well you get paid for it.

That being said, I love aspects of my job. These would be the competencies that they put on a job description (ie: working with account managers, managing projects).

I'm a contractor at a large software company (ah hem) -- its been an interesting experience being essentially, a long term termp... but I've really grown to like the lifestyle. It pays well, I get to meet lots of people, and if I wanted to go full time at the company, I have a leg in the door -- my current team could even introduce me to other teams. I also have lots a of flexibiliy (I can go in to work at 10am and leave at 6 or 6:30) -- and I get to work from home once a week.

It's not what I wanted to be doing (nonprofit management) -- but it definitely allows me a lifestyle that includes paying my ridiculous student loans.

I would say overall I like my job. Although I tend to change specific jobs within my profession I really like what I do. I am a nurse so there are many options. I love the fact that there is such a variety. Although there are certain aspects of my job that I could live without I can't see myself doing anything else.

What a great thread!

I work in Human Resources as a Recruiter and love what I do - every day is different, and there's great satisfaction in knowing that I have recruited a candidate for a hard to fill position, or just made a job offer to a candidate who was out of work through no fault of their own. In an ideal world, I would still do my day job, but also run a resume writing/critiquing business and write articles for HR publications.

You should still do that!! I'm sure you could start that business online...

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my jewelry business and can't wait until I can do that full-time!! Hopefully within the next 2 years that will be reality.

Until then, I work for a non-profit where i run a high school peer leader program for teens practicing abstinence until marriage. I love the teens I work with and feeling like the work I do actually means something to someone. But it gets discouraging sometimes when I see how many kids we don't reach or reach too late and they have already gotten pregnant, gotten an STD, fallen into depression....

Sometimes I love my job other times I hate it.

I like helping people but then I find that they are totally and utterly selfish and I wonder why I bother.

I have to say I wish I'd not started on this path most of the time but I'm stuck now lol

Like ashrose said- You can do this if you want to I think. It's a perfect match to go along with the HR job.

I actually know I am very lucky to have landed the job I did. I tried the whole college thing, but it just wasn't for me. I work at a busy RE/MAX office in Denver and have full bennefits, 2 weeks paid vacation and 5 sick days, and over-time. I'm cross trained on the front desk, listing desk and closing desk which are 3 different full time jobs there. I make great money for never having gone to college. Most days it's completely relaxing, and joking around with real estate agents. Like any job it has it's days where you wannna pull your hair out, but not very many *knock on wood*. For as much damn time as we have to spend at our jobs, I can say I do enjoy mine, but wish I could be doing a million other things with Bo and be outside constantly. :)

    • I’m a wedding planner/organizer by profession. Truth be told, I don’t have that much experience in the industry but I’m doing the best I can. We will be working on a wedding next month with a foreign couple. I’m usually the one who handles everything on behalf of the bride during the day so I need some tips and advice on how to handle brides from foreign countries. Do they need special accommodations? What are the kinds of services they are used to when under pressure? What kind of snacks should I offer them during breaks or when they’re hungry? Thanks so much in advance.

    • Hi, I am getting married after one year. I have tons of planning to do and very little time. Planning a wedding can be difficult especially when there is less time. I have to do a lot of things on my own and at the same time work overtime to earn more money. Recently when I was hanging out with my close friends, I noticed that my friend who had crooked teeth like mine had perfect teeth now. I was surprised to see that I asked her that what did you do for a sudden change. She said that she tried Invisalign braces and had a change with her smile within a short time. I told about this to my bf and he also told me to give a try for it. I took an appointment with a dentist in Aurora. I don't know whether there will be a  change within a short time. What can you say on this? Am I taken a good decision?
    • Hi, I'm in a relationship with a guy who is in my college. He is planning to migrate from our area and he wants to marry me before he leaves. He is well planned for our marriage. He accompanied me for all the wedding shopping and was supporting me a lot. But there was an unexpected accident and I fell down hitting the floor. I was taken to the nearby clinic for getting the emergency dental care  from a clinic in Toronto. My front canine was lost after the accident and I think I need to get dentures before my wedding. Or according to your opinion what can be done other than dentures?
