Is Cancun in the Riviera Maya?

 

I want to put Riviera Maya on my STDs and Invites... because it sounds more romantic than Cancun (which reminds me of MTV spring break). Just want to make sure that it is accurate to put that on there...

 

Maybe the location in Cancun matters? I'm getting married at Moon Palace.

I put Riviera Maya on my STDs. We are getting married at El Dorado Royale. I would go off what the resort website says to be safe.

I'm pretty sure that the area is serviced by Cancun airport,but I agree with beth that you should go off what the resort website says so as not to confuse your guests. I don't think Cancun has a negative connotation. Unless you are holding the ceremony at Senor Frogs then I am sure your guests will look foward to a beautiful wedding

I had a problem with that too when looking for a place. I really didn't want to put Cancun, since at one point or another, most of my friends Spring Breaked there. And I didn't want them to have those crazy memories attached to my wedding location. But I think you can totally put Riviera Maya.

"Riviera Maya" is a tourism district following the coastal Highway 400 which parallels the Caribbean coastline of Quintana Roo, Mexico. This district historically started at at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum, although the towns of Puerto Morelos situated to the north and between Playa del Carmen and Cancun as well as the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto situated 40 km to the south of Tulum are both currently being promoted as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor. The Riviera Maya was originally called the Cancun - Tulum corridor, but in 1999 it was renamed as the Riviera Maya with the aid of Lic. Miguel Ramón Martín Azueta who at the time was the mayor of the municipality of Solidaridad. The municipality of Solidaridad includes the whole of the official Riviera Maya from Playa del Carmen in the north and south to Tulum and extending to some 40 km inland with the border with the state of Yucatan."

Generally, Cancun is not, to the best of my knowledge, considered the Riviera Maya. However, the Moon Palace is south of Cancun, and even if not technically part of the RM (though I would argue it is), then it's close enough for government work.

 

More importantly, if you want your stuff to say RM, they should say RM!

Sadly... I don't thinK Riviera Maya includes Cancun. Like the definition above, it starts about 40 miles south of Cancun.

Having been to both areas.....

 

If I got an invite that said 'Riviera Maya' I would think of everything south of Cancun.

 

The website says Cancun and the address for the hotel is in Cancun.

Unfortunately, I don't think Cancun is considered to be Riviera Maya! sorry!
