Anyone NOT using a resort?

Hey hawaii brides-

So I've been perusing threads for the last several days, looking for some input from anyone who's not planning a resort wedding, but I haven't found much. So I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask...

We're looking for an estate or beach house where we could have the ceremony, reception and most importantly have all of our family together for a few days, w/out using a resort. Has anyone else weighed the pros/cons of using a resort?

Also, I'm thinking a WC would be a really good idea, and other sites/ mags tell you to ask a lot of questions first, but I don't really know what to ask. And what's up with all these packages they offer? How do you all feel about buying a package?

I am getting married at Kona Village on Big Island. it is a resort but an untraditional one at that.

as for Kauai, we are honeymooning there...half the week at Waimea Plantation Cottages (which is a resort) and then the other half at Kauai Vacation Rentals - Hale Makai Beach Cottages - Kauai Guide (which is NOT a resort and i believe on the N. Shore)

The Hale Makai cottages would be perfect for you if you have a pretty small group - they only have 5 cottages and it is very private.

some of the downside is that without the infrastructure of a resort you will have to bring EVERYTHING in and that can get super, duper expensive, especially in Hawaii.

let me know if you have anymore questions and Congrats!

Thanks Alyssa! Hale Makai looks really nice, that's the type of spot we're looking for. I'm going to speak to a WC who also co-owns a party rental company on kauai. I imagine that'd make things easier, but not necessarily less expensive...

Hmm.. I'm getting married on Maui, not Kauai.. but we are all renting condos close to each other. I know there are some bigger-type places that have quite a few bedrooms etc.. but didn't look too hard at them. A local WC should be able to help you pick out the perfect spot.. but Alyssa has some awesome info that you should check out :)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
