Brian Nejedly (Jamaican photog that I am using) just e-mailed me and said he thinks that the RIU has changed their outside photog policy - He thinks that they no longer charge a fee for an outside photog. Now, I don't know if that means the breach of contract fee or the guest pass, but either way, saves me a bit of money!!

Confirmation: You have to pay for the day pass, but there is no "breack of contract" fee. According to Brian -

I do still need a day pass to get on the property, but that's all. I've had no problems with Michael any time I've been at Riu. I've read in some online forums that he got in the way, etc., but I have not had any problem with that, and if I did, would tell him to back off. Their wedding coordinator Chandelyn is very cool and very on top of things. She was aware of negative comments made online, and knowing how much that could hurt business, made the necessary changes. *I'm generally not a fan of the huge resorts, but*I think they do a great job with weddings at Riu.

I noticed that you are getting married on a Saturday also, that's my issue we are getting married on Saturday but we are leaving on Monday. I was asking Michael is the Photoshop is closed on Sundays, how will I be able to view my pics before I leave?

I have to guess that he would send you a photo with all the low-res proofs that he took. Then you would tell him which ones you want, he would retouch, and then send them to you. Thats what I would have asked, regardless (I'm staying 'til Tues.).....just because you don't want to spend 2-3 hours at his office looking at hundreds of photos while beautiful Jamaica is out there!!!

I got married on a Saturday and had the free package I went on Thursday to book him but his worker blew me off. So when I went on Friday morning he just expected I didn't need him. He said if you don't book him if you have a free package he won't show up! I had to come back to the RIU because I was still on the island later that week to view my photos. Just make sure if you order from home he charges you the same price if you would have ordered there. Because it's not your fault they are closed on Sunday.

I spoke to Michael as an outside photographer and he told me he would charge the hotel. The question is would the hotel pass it on to you? Both RIU and Michael will probably shift their policy as it suits and cerainly if there are too many outside photographers. The hotel will want to please their guests but at the end of the day, they have a contract with Michael and do earn commission from him on a constant basis. I think anyone wanting to use an outside photographer has to be prepared to pay the $200 fee and for the day pass. Either that or get something in writing from the hotel.

Ok so I also used Michael and was very pleased with his services. He was very kind and was tried to rid himself of all the negative stereotypes that he has been accused of. We got the ClassicPackage which was $20 than the free package but gave you 4 more 4x6 photos. We also purchased another hour, which we clearly went over because my guests are crazy and were having so much fun that Michael took pictures of us at the Beach Gazebo, through the lobby, down to the beach, in the ocean, in the lobby, and out to the pond gazebo. He was really patient and very interactive with my wild bunch. We also purchased the additional 30 5x7 photos. We also got a hook up for getting the 10 4x6's and 30 5x7's hi res on CD. So total we got 10-4x6's, 30-5x7's, 2-8x10's, and extra 45 mins (really an extra 2 hours almost), 40 prints hi res, and 720 prints low res on DVD for $630. And the pics are PHENOMENAL. They are absolutely stunning.

I'm glad that you had a positive experience with Michael. I have been wrecking my brain trying to decide if I should hire a outside photographer. I will wait until you post your pics before I make my decision.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
