Serious question about breast cancer

Hello all. Sad topic but I have to ask, maybe someone knows aout it.

 

I have a friend who woke up one morning with blood coming out of her left niple. Her shirt was stuck to her and she thought she was cut, but wasnt. So she went to docs and I they did test, etc and her results wont be back until Fri. They said it could be breast cancer. 3 years ago she had a baseball size tumor removed from the back of her left arm, so we thought maybe it spread to her left boob, ?.. IF cancer is what it is.

 

Does anyone know if that ihappens to women when they get breat cancer? I never heard that before. Normally al I hear about are tumors.

I was really curious so did a little search and this is what I found:

 

"You need to be seen by a breast surgeon/specialist. The bleeding may represent an intraductal papilloma, a cancer, or just fibrocystic changes. You will need a mammogram and possibly an intraductal dye injection. The observation that the blood is coming from just one duct is against fibrocystic change and is associated about 9 times out of 10 with a benign intraductal papilloma and about one time out of 10 with an intraductal carcinoma. Be sure to have it checked out. The odds are way in favor of being a benign process but even with the small chance of malignancy, if treated early it is entirely curable"

I don't have personal experience with this, but have done quite a bit of cancer research. (I volunteer for an ovarian cancer group).

 

I checked a few online resources where we refer people, and the general concensus was that is doesn't mean cancer.

 

Most physicans will send you immediately for a biopsy, just to be sure.

 

Often times it is a ductal papilloma, which is benign. Either way, she should get checked out ASAP and try not to worry too much. Even if it is cancer, if there are no detectable lumps in the breast, it means she caught it early.

 

I'll be keeping her in my thoughts!

Scary! I had a few aunts battle breast cancer- they just had lumps removed and I was younger so I don't know a lot of the details. I feel for your friend though. I would be freaking out. I hope it's nothing too serious.

yes exactly, she said she dont feel any lumps but was just nervous b/c she has it before in her arm. thanks!!! hopefully it isnt that disgusting disease.

Though things like this are most often benign, as the other have said, I'm sure that they are more concerned due to the fact that she does have a history of another tumor. Your friend (and you too!) are in my thoughts. How old is she? I am a pharmacist in an oncology clinic and it is so amazing to me the number of young women that we see in the clinic for chemo.
