I'm also concerned with how bumpy the ride is. I have gotten sick on several flights on cessnas/private planes and I've never gotten sick on a commercial plane. Granted I'm flying with fighter pilots in the cessnas and they like to make them dip and do all sorts of crazy stuff, but I still puke. (FI LOVES being with a girl with a weak stomach.) But it just seems way too bumpy for a gentle little newborn. (Although, they would fly as smoothly as possible with a newborn on board.)

But I also can't imagine driving that entire way, so it seems like you could endure the bumpiness for a few hours? As long as the pressure wasn't a problem...

Ann, If you do drive, to someone else's point, the route needs to be planned carefully to make sure you don't get stuck out in Podunk somewhere. Maybe we could plan the trip along BDWers homes and you could stay with them along the way?

I still think your company should be paying for this!!!! Have you asked your HR person? They have an obligation to get you home!!

This may be a bit out there (but the Oprah idea got me thinking)...you should contact a local news station and they could do a story on it. On my news stations, when stories air about people in situations like this (well not exactly like this, but KWIM?), a lot of times people donate things...like an RV rental or whatever.

I think this is a great idea. Contact a local news station in Cali and in your home town....or maybe one of us can contact them for you. I also think your work should be helping!

You probably already did this... but did you check with your insurance company to see if they would cover the cost of an air ambulance. My sister gave birth at 32 weeks in Oregon (she was living near Minneapolis at the time). My niece had several complications unrelated to prematurity that required immediate surgery. At 34 weeks gestational age my sister, BIL, and niece took a medical jet to MN so she could be treated at Children's Hospital in Mnpls. I believe their insurance covered most of the cost.

My 3 suggestions:

 

1. For piece of mind, stay on the ground in your own vehicle/RV. You'll want to be there in an emergency, and you'll want the option of being able to stop and take care of things as needed. In a train/bus/plane you can't do that. Don't think of the travel time, think of the tales of adventure you can share down the line

 

2. Contact as many charities as possible and plead your case. Are you guys (or your families) affiliated with any churches? They have money or can collect some for you.

 

3. Speak to your employer. I know you are independant contractors - but were it not for them having you work OOT so late in your pregnancy you would not be stuck in CA with the baby. You and Paul have been working there for years, right? They may just kick you down some money and right now you can't afford not to ask...good luck!

So I work doing transfers on a ground ambulance just like your looking for with the Air Ambulance and here in Canada our Health Care covers a significant portion of it and then private Health Care covers the rest. Did you look into your Health Care coverage and insurance to see if they would cover some of the cost? Maybe if you get the doctor to state that your baby needs special care to be able to fly that could drop the cost somehow.

Geez, after reading everything I am even more confused. I just know that with all this love and support you, Paul and little Gwen are bound to get home safely. And if for whatever reason you stop off in Dallas, we've got a downstairs office/bedroom that's a little small but you're welcome to use!

I think the RV idea is the best if you can't do a commercial flight. I don't know what else to say except that I hope you figure something out. I echo everyone's offer to help out however I can.

I think the RV would work. Although I more like a year old and not a few months, my parents drove our RV to MX with my brothers and myself in the bassinet and everything went well.

Well I dont have any great advise, but if i remember correctly you are in Walnut Creek? I am just 40 minutes away, so if you need ANYTHING I could be right there for you.
