Oh, yes. My friends were all pretty cool with it, but a lot of people in my family flipped. My favorite quote came from my 98 year old (adorable) grandmother who said "oh my word, you're getting married in Mexico? Honey, my friend Agnes went there and about 3 years after she got home she DIED." I said "well, how old was Agnes?" And Grandma said "oh, she was young, maybe 85?"

I love, love, love that my Grandma does not yet think she's old. :)

But you're right! You've gotta do what you've gotta do! People may be condescending, but you're not getting married to appease anyone else. It will all work out. Hopefully they will come and see how fabulous it is!!!

I'm in your same boat as well. The backlash I'm getting is from one aunt who told my parents "maybe they should do something more convenient for everybody, like getting married on the east coast". This is very silly because she is the ONLY one in my family who lives on the east coast the rest of us all live in California! thankfully my parents are completely backing me up so that a bit of a load off. oh and the grandma quote is one of the funniest things Ive ever heard!

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you brought this up. It happens to me all the time. In fact, my future MIL tried to talk me out of it, and had her friends start in on me too! We've based the date around a time when we felt it would be easier on everyone's schedules, but still get that sense of disapproval. Sooooo, this is what we're doing.......we are making sure that everyone knows that our wedding could be just one small part of their fabulous vacation. Then we can see their wheels turning and thoughts towards a vacation for themselves.

I think you would have a much shorter list of brides if you asked "who as this NOT happened to?"

It's typical- not that it makes the feelings any better. But I'm sure it makes you feel better to know you aren't alone and past brides can tell you that it's all worth it. :)

I had the same negative reactions and a few people saying things like "What you think your too good to get married in the U.S?"

Don't listen to the negativity and do what you want. In the end you will see who is the most important people in your lives because they will be there to support you.

the latest is that people can't believe we're getting married in mexico since a tourist got killed there last month. 10 people got killed in toronto last week! sigh...

but my mom has finally come around (after 6 months) and seems to be getting excited, and we have 35 booked already, expecting about 50, and they really are my most favourite people. the people that really matter will make it. we still have a few grumblers, but i really think they would be the ones grumbing any way we did it. so at least this me me and FI are happy!

good luck! and don't take it personal! you'll have the best wedding ever so it will all be worth it! good thread.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
