SGOR Brides, A ? About Paperwork

Recommended Posts

I know that all we need to send ahead of time is a notarized copy of our birth certificates and the form that they sent us to fill out. What do they mean by notarized copy? My fiance and I are at odds about what this actually means. I thought all we had to do was take our birth certificate to a notary, they'd copy it and stamp it. He thinks we need to request a copy of our birth certificate, have it mailed to us and then send it on to the wedding planner. Who's right? I really need to get this done ASAP and don't want to do the wrong thing and possibly screw up our wedding!

We are having the same problem. We are getting married at SGOR on August 30th, so we need to send our papers in soon. Someone called me from Sandals the other day to remind me!! I thought we could make a copy and get it notarized, but apparently in NC notaries cannot do this. I think that in some states they can. So we are requesting notarized copies from the states we were born in - South Carolina and Texas. There is an awesome website - VitalChek Express - Birth Certificates, Death Certificates, Marriage Records, Divorce Records and Vital Records where you can request a copy of your birth certificate and you can get a copy back in 14 days. That is what we are doing. Also, I think Sandals does not return the copies of your birth certificate, so you don't want to give them your only copy!

When we did it, the notaries did my husbands and mine two different ways. My notary copied the certified copy of my birth certificate and then wrote a note at the bottom that says, "This is to certify that this is the true and original copy of Gionne Last name's birth certificate." Then he had me sign and date it, then signed it himself and stamped with his notary stamp. My husband's notary just stamped the photocopy of the birth certificate and signed and dated it. We sent those in and everything was fine.

So, to me, you are both partly right. You will need a COPY of your original birth certificate and have the copy notarized (signed and stamped) by a notary.

We also found that some notaries will refuse to notarize a copy of the birth certificate, which is why my notary made a copy from the original and notarized from there. Hope this helps! I'm interested to hear from others on this.

I was confused about it too and had the same arguement with my husband..lol

I went to the post office and made photocopies of the original and took them to the notary. I then sent the photocopied version in and then emailed Darma and asked her to verify that I did the right thing. She ok everything and there was not problem with it. I got an offical confirmation from Sandas a few days later. They will tell you if you don't have everthing in order but it much more simple then I thought it was going to be..lol

BTW do you all have your passports yet?

Thank you girls for your response! He basically thought we had to request another certified copy from the department of health (or whoever sends them in the first place!) and then send that in! I was convinced we didn't have to go through all of that. He got his copied and notarized yesterday and mine is going to get done today. His mom can notarize things because of her job so that was a huge help!

I have my passport already (got in a few years ago) and he is starting the process today. That's why I was in a panic--we needed to get his birth certificate copied before he had to send it away!

Thanks for your help cheesy.gif

  • 1 year later...

Jamaicabride09- I have the date of Sept 13th...just wondering if you have the same date?

I just recieved my original birth cert, and now I am trying to notarize it...I went to 2 separate places and they wont do it! They said they aren't allowed?? My TA is waiting to hear back from my wedding planner with more details. I was just going to request for another birth cert. but then again I don't feel comfortable sending an original document....

Let me know what your TA finds out and I will let you know what mine finds out! I am stressing because I need to apply for my passport! Meanwhile, Mike applied for his passport 4 weeks ago and he hasn't gotten yet so we dont have his birth cert to get notarized.....

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
