I posted this in the Dreams Tulum Closure thread but thought I would duplicate it here. MOD's feel free to delete or move if it's not appropriate.

I recently (October 3-10, 200cool.gif visited the Barcelo Maya Palace. I really loved the place, but I wasn't there for a wedding and wasn't looking at anything specifically with a wedding in mind. We've been there, done that already this year and so this was a vacation just for the two of us. I feel really guilty saying that. . . I'm sorry girls.

You do have to wear a wristband and there are different colours for the different sides of the resort. We did see a guard on the pathway to the palace stopping guests who were from another side of the resort.

We did drink premium alcohol at all bars all over the whole resort, but not all bars had what we wanted. If they didn't we just moved to another one or drank something else. e.g. my husband wanted 10 year old port and went to three different bars to find it but once he did I think he drank the whole bottle. Our wristbands were checked when we ordered premium alcohol at the bars on the Tropical/Colonial side.

We had unlimited al a carte reservations, but I don't know if it is always like that, because it was not busy, or because we were with Transat Holidays Prestiege Class. I loved the al a carte restaurants at the Palace. We've been to the resort before but stayed at the Tropical/Colonial side. The Palace is definately a class above the other sides. The decor is amazing. All the rooms are junior suites or above.

I would reiterate that the best place for information on the Barcelo is UNOFFICIAL BARCELO MAYA | Your unofficial guide to Beach | Caribe | Tropical | Colonial | Palace and sign up for the forum Unofficial Unofficial Barcelo Maya - Index

For pictures I would say the best collection of pictures on the palace are this persons here Picasa Web Albums - Jasper he has them divided up into the different areas of the Palace.

I do have some pictures, from 2007 of the chapel which is on the Colonial side (it might be the Tropical) and they are here:

I hope that helps someone.

Why would there be different colored wrist bands for the different sides of the resort? And why would they be stopping someone who was from a different side? Do you not have access to the whole resort if you stay there? Sorry for the questions, I just don't quite understand.

thanks for all the new links, info, and pictures Helen and Shannon!!

Yes they do have a nightclub. I heard it is closed on Wednesdays, but not for sure on that.

The different color wristbands are for the different resorts. Since you are at the Palace you have access to all of the resorts (five in total including the Palace). Those staying at other resorts can not come to the Palace and use the facilities. There is also an option to upgrade your wristband to VIP or Club Premium. From what I have read the value of doing this is the free internet. It also says you get premium liquor, but from reading reviews it looks like that is included for everyone staying at the Palace. Hope this helps!

If you book to stay at the Caribe/Beach side you can only use the facilities on that side. If you book to stay at the Tropical/Colonial you can use the facilities there plus the ones at the Caribe/Beach side. Booking to stay at the Palace entitles you to use the facilities anywhere on the resort. Since I have only heard those of you who were booked at Dreams Tulum being transfered to the Palace it shouldn't be an issue.

I've been in the nightclub which is over on the Colonial side. We went there two nights (I can't remember which two) but we didn't stay too long the second time. The resort had a lot of Italian guests when we were there and they were playing mostly European dance music. I guess they change the music to suit the crowd and we were definately the minority :) The first night we went we had a good time there as well as when we visited the resort before.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
