ETA: I don't know why I keep saying "down south" I just mean the US! lol
I learned about this while working for Revenue Canada last year! I think it's awesome, especially for the people working the hard industries (mining, etc) because alot of them don't live there year round & it's expensive to travel back & forth & maintain 2 residences!

If it makes you feel better, I call the Toronto area here in Ontario "down south" as I live 8 hours north of it! lol So don't feel so bad! wink.gif

I wonder if there are more areas than just teachers where folks make more in Canada, I am a legal assistant and I make a base salary of $55K, plus taxable benefits (paid transit and parking, full medical and dental) which all in all really add up to around $60K (transit is VERY expensive here). I have been doing what I do now for 15 years (ever since high school), but my salary is all based on work experience and not a degree of any kind. I took a legal secretarial program out of high school (one year and cost $5K), plus a few "upgrade" courses along the way, but I feel that I am very fortunate to be working in a field that I love and getting paid well for it.

That said, my fiancee does make more than I do. He probably wouldn't feel comfortable with me posting what he makes, but it's plus or minus the $100K mark and he works in HR, a higher management position.

Both of the women in my bridal party are well paid too (better than me but less than my fiancee) and they work very different jobs than myself. One is a policewoman and the other is in real estate.

Hey....those of you who mentioned being in journalism and broadcast......do you happen to cover financial topics? Mutual Funds? Personal Finance? Money Managers? LOL If so....I have some "experts" who you may want to talk to ;-) (can't blame me for trying...every contact helps).

FI makes a lot more than me. He works for the NYC Department of Sanitation as a Mechanic. We can live TIGHTLY on just his salery...but we don't like to live tightly lol

I just graduated so I will be converted to a permanent position in the Forest Service within the next month. I have worked for them since 2005 under the SCEP position which was a student position where I could work as many hours as I wanted and they would pay me $5k a year to go to school. Catch is for every year I borrow I have to work that many years for them or I pay it back. I thought it was great, no worries about having to find a job once I graduate.

I work as a an assistant biologist on the Coronado National Forest in Tucson. My main projects include writing assessments that comply with federal laws on threatened an endangered species, surveys of different species on the forest, habitat assessment, resource advising on fires, and fighting fires. I get to go out an hike a lot and see lots of cool stuff (of course if you like the outdoors), but then I pay for it when I have to do all of my reports.

FI told me that he was marrying me for my $$$, I told him you picked the wrong girl. Most I will ever make is around $50k (max out a GS-11), right now I will be lucky to make $35k (GS-7). But I love my job and I get to see and do really cool stuff so its a tradeoff. And its not like I will ever be living in a large town where cost of living is outrageous because most FS districts are in tiny towns. And its the government so they compensate you some for living somewhere expensive.

I'm a financial analyst for a pharmaceutical company. I make very decent money, ($70K+) however I think that the cost of living in Toronto is pretty high so that's why my salary is higher than it would be if I was to work in a more remote city.

As to the "glass ceiling" I would say that I am on par with my friends in terms of pay but I know that some of them will get capped pretty soon whereas my earning potential will continue to grow. In my opinion, the glass ceiling has a lot to do with your chosen career path as some jobs unfortunately get capped (I'm think of teachers and health care professionals).

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
