Gran Bahia Principe Akumal/Tulum/Coba - POST HERE!

Recommended Posts

Hi Marina

Our wedding in March will be my 3rd time at the gran Bahia, I have stayed at tulum and akumal and we chose tulum for our wedding.  On our last trip in 2010 we stayed at akumal but we went around to the different buffet restaurants and I found tulum has a much nicer & bigger buffet restaurant than the coba and akumal.  I personally prefer tulum because of the slightly bigger buffet (though I can't remember specifics about how much bigger, I just remember they always seemed to have more dessert selections!)  I also find the beach at tulum is a bit nicer, I found akumal is a bit more rocky. Coba isn't listed as beach front property, it is located kind of behind the akumal section,  it is a fair walk to the beach but nothing unreasonable.  Coba is newer so the rooms may be nicer, but in saying that I have never heard complaints about the rooms in tulum.

Personally I would go with Akumal or Tulum because they are closer to the beach, and I feel tulum has a nicer buffet and beach than akumal.  In the big picture though you can't go wrong with either of the three, the nice thing is you have access to everything so if you go to tulum and decide you like the akumal pool better or the coba bar, you just go there!  Also from what I have read on sites like this I haven't heard much about differences in the actual rooms between the three resorts.

I wouldn't stress too much over which of the three to pick, you get to roam between the three.  Also something that might help you decide is looking at the wedding locations for each resort, I had already decided on tulum before I looked at the wedding locations, luckily I love the tulum gazebo so that worked out for me.  If you stay at tulum I be live you can only get married at a tulum site, but if you stay at coba I be live you have the option of either akumal or tulum.

We've decided on Gran Bahia Principe with our agent but cannot decide whether to go with Coba or Tulum as the resort for our group of 20 to stay at. We've read that Coba is the newer section of the complex which is nicer, however its further from the beach while Tulum is older but right on the beach. Any suggestions out there on how you guys decided which resort to go with?

Crystal,

Thank you for putting all of that into your review!! It was great to read about all the details - LOL makes it easier when planning my own!!  Thanks for the tip about the cd for the wedding! Just one question: was it extra for the rehearsal dinner that night before?

arielh - nope it was no extra because we just had it at the main buffet. i confirmed it with my WC in our meeting, she just reserved the table for us half hour before it opens up for everyone. I think it only costs extra if you want like decorations or something. Realistically, if you don't care about the half hour of private time before the public comes in, you could just rally your group together and go at the same time, in the akumal main buffet for example (we did this for our "welcome dinner" just walked in at 7pm) they have 3 tables in the back corner already set up for large groups, so that's where we went! We only had 26 guests though :)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
