Katryne... that made me spit out my water.  You're awesome.  It'll go great!  I forget, do you know what you're having??

Legal ceremony.  It's done in Spanish.  It will be translated into English.  You can add sand ceremony/personal vows/etc at the end.   It's very short.  I thought I had the script somewhere on my computer, but I can't find it.  It might be in the official thread.

As for the symbolic ceremony... I suck.  Sorry!  I've heard it twice now, but both times I was too busy taking pictures to actually listen to what they said.  The pictures rock though, so there's that, right?!!?? :)

Thanks Trisha!  We're expecting "Monster".  haha.. we didn't ask what the sex was, we liked the surprise last time so going for that again.  We're actually pretty granola (I'm a midwife) and are having a homebirth.  I'll be sure to report what "Monster" is ;)

So personal vows/sand ceremony and then signing I guess?

Trisha...I know you are a very talented photographer from the resort tours you posted. Those pics are absolutely gorgeous. If we weren't flying in our friend who is a photographer, I'd be contacting you! That being said, do you have any suggestions of places within a half hour bus ride of the resorts where we could do "engagement" shots a few days before the wedding? We want to avoid a beach scene since the wedding pics will be that. Was hoping to have a Mexican feel in the pics...somewhere with little shops or a village-type atmosphere?

Symbolic Ceremony

It's been 3 years but here's what I remember.

The ceremony was performed in English. There was no rehearsal and I had no idea the order of the ceremony nor the wording beforehand. This didn't really concern me as I had been so reassured by all the brides on this forum that the WC's would take care of everything...and trust me they did!!

I wanted a Sand Ceremony and I wanted it performed by a dear friend of mine so I simply told my WC and she made sure the officient knew about it. The ceremony itself was really nice. I don't remember everything that he said but I can tell you that there were what I would consider mild religious references -  symbolisms of two becoming one, the bond of marriage, the gift of love and that sort of thing. I remember afterward thinking that it was the perfect ceremony for us...simple, with just a touch of religion, to help pass the symbolic ceremony off as a legal one. (We married at City Hall when we returned to Canada)

The Sand Ceremony was performed by our friend after the officient finished but before the signing of the certificate. Because we didn't know the order of the ceremony, we just followed the officient's lead and everything worked out beautifully.

With regard to the wind at the Akumal Hammocks location...yes, it can be windy but you and your guests will be grateful for it on a HOT day!

Hope that helps!

Sunnyee

That's sweet of you to say!  Thanks!

I would do engagement pictures in Akumal.  Near the bay and the Turtle Bay Cafe.  It's not as touristy as the Playa area, but I think you'd be happy with it.

When I stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe in September, I took the collectivo from the resort to Akumal beach.  It took maybe 10-15 minutes and only cost about 5$ for two people.  The van drops you off on the side of the highway and it's a short (5 mins) walk to the little shops and beach area.  There is this really neat little area just behind the rock building that leads to the beach that has all of these little shops and restaurants.  It is completely encased in trees and vines and has a really cool atmosphere.  I think that might be where Trisha is talking about.

There is great snorkeling off of the beach too!  I have been a few times and have always seen sea turtles.

On our return to GBP, we got a taxi back to the resort for maybe 15-20$ - we negotiated.

I haven't been to the resort, but I've been looking at pictures of the resort on TripAdvisor for photos with the wedding party and the FI, and I absolutely LOVE the Hacienda. From photos, there's little shops there and the yellow building as a backdrop looks amazing too! Check it out.

My friend who got married in Playa del Carmen also told me about 5th Avenue with little boardwalk shops kind of feel, which I thought would be nice too for what you're looking for.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
