Do the 'legal' part (courthouse marriage) in Canada

I was very against it at first. However, we're getting married in Mexico, and to get married legally there requires too much work (waiting 3-4 days after arrival to get married, and a blood test while in Mexico). The blood test just scared me, so I decided to just go to City Hall (I'm in Toronto) to get the paper work done. Just 2 witness that is required, and keeping it low-key as well. At the DW, we're going to arrange to have something signed so people can't tell the difference that it is just a ceremonial wedding in Mexico.

I was totally the same.  I thought it would feel 'fake' if we got married ahead of time and had a symbolic ceremony.  After lots of research and hearing from other brides (mostly on here), it seems like the big day in Mexico is no less 'special' if you sign the paperwork ahead of time. We have decided to legally get married in Vancouver a few days before we go to Mexico.  I want it low key as well.  Both sets of parents will be there, along with an Uncle and Aunt (that my fiance is very close with) that cannot make it to Mexico. I don't want any 'mushy' stuff, no ring exchanging,  just the legal paperwork.  We will probably go for dinner afterwards.  We will also arrange to sign something in Mexico during our ceremony.

I love the sound of this. At first I was dead against getting the legal stuff done before the wedding but now I think it's best. However I was wondering if it effects anything when it comes to passports, flights etc because technically I would have my FI's last name...

Nothing is legal till it's filed and once it's filed you need a marriage certificate to have your name changed on documents, accounts, etc. That doesn't happen quickly. My friend said if your ID and passport match no one questions anything. Lots of people don't even change their last name :)

The lady at the registry told us you can get them no earlier than 90 days from

The wedding date. They are around $75 if I am recalling correctly.

 

I have a plate to surrender so I plan to do that this week and get this at the same

Time!!

The registry. Apparently they can charge what they want. So I paid $92 at the one in Beddington Calgary.

 

I plan to email Lucy Miller in the next week or two to firm up a date for January.

I emailed 2-3 in Calgary and Lucy Miller was the cheapest. I know 2 people who have used her. You just go to her home.

I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010.
