People have a vision of "the big day" and I support it if it truly makes them happy inside to see all the bells and whistles (even if it they could vaccinate a small country with what they spend!) I don't support it if they do it so people can whisper about how lavish it was & how much they must have spent, I think that's pretty much tacky...

 

I've been to pricey weddings and cheap-ass weddings, like make-your-own-reception weddings...those aren't the best but I'd go to one again if invited. I could have fun dancing in a backyard and eating off of styrofoam plates so if I go to one with snazzy table decor and stuff it's a visual bonus but the fun factor is usually the same.

 

But $28k? Not our style...yet another example of how we aren't the average couple...lol

In the US, 82% of couples spend less than the average wedding cost while 18% of couples spend more than the average.

 

Maybe something like a median would be a better reprentation when 82% spend less than the average. Those 18% could be totally skewing the numbers.

And, yes, NY is crazy. FI and I thought about doing a local wedding. We called a couple of "moderate" venues and (no joke) the rental fee for a Friday or Saturday night was between $5,000 and $8,000 - and that was just to unlock the doors and turn the lights on!!! Um... hellooooooo Mexico!

Oh that sounds like the best time EVER. And I'm not kidding. We visited NY for 3 days and spent parts of our vacation in Philly and surrounding PA cities. We have talked about going back to NY for a longer stay and when we do, I'm calling you girls up to paint the town pink (LOL- you know, with flamingos!)

Weddings are expensive but the budget numbers can be skewed. Do you talk about just food, include the dress & rings, etc. I usually tell my brides that they need to have at least one $50 bill to put down next to every name on their guest list because that is how much it costs in the long run when you do figure in attire, honeymoon, and all of the extras.

 

I think most of us are guilty of getting caught up in the moment or finding something super cute and it's only $37.99. Too many $37.99s add up really quickly!

 

I'm hoping to keep our total under 30k. That is inclusive of everything for the wedding for 32 guests and our AHR for 300. I had originally hoped for 20k, but then FI's family backed out costing us $3000 in cancellation fees and 2 BMs didn't have the money so that was another $4000.

 

I realize I was planning on spending a good deal of money, but I view that $7000 as completely wasted and unnecessary! FI needs a new car and we are trying to buy a house and tht much money could have really come in handy. If I could have paid for everyone I would have offered, but I have to cover this because it is my name on the contract!
