Hey gals, I got married in court today! Yay! Totally exciting! It was a great decision... now I don't have to worry about the hassle down in Mexico! I definitely recommend all destination brides do this. Noone will know and its cheaper... for me it was $30 bucks for a license and $10 the day you get married for court fees or something... nothing can beat that! Well worth it I tell ya!

I am planning on doing the symbolic thing as well!

So when you get married at home, do you get the marriage certificate right then? or do they mail that to you or something?

LC Rachel, we are also considering going to Vegas! yay!! Are you happy you did that? We thought it would just make things a little more fun!! And we totally want a picture with Elvis!! haha!!

I first wanted to do the legal process and everything in Mexico, but after reading all the requirements, no way! Too much hassle, even though I still wanted to do it the day of the ceremony, because the date we picked is very meaningful to us, and we want the DATE on our paper!!

Would be interested if anyone else has a program from a symbolic ceremony!

I just posted our ceremony script here: http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/t21660

I have a quick question...but first...Aeroo...you're awesome. In the few days I have followed your posts about your wedding and the Royal/Gran Porto, you have been such a huge help, and I wanted to take a moment to thank you. Your ceremony sounds...perfect!

My question is...for a symbolic ceremony at the Royal, or in Mexico in general, I don't really have someone I want to "officiate" the ceremony. Will the wedding coordinator, when I speak with her, be able to suggest a symbolic ceremony minister or something, at a fee of course, to do this for us? Some of guests won't even know that when we say "I DO" on the beach, we've already legalized it at home...and even though we will be legalizing it before we get to Mexico, I really want the ceremony to feel...authentic. That really is when my FI and I will feel...official!

Any suggestions?

Yes absolutely. The price of the ceremony includes the minister. I don't think you actually meet the minister though until the day of the wedding though. When you book your wedding date and time, she will confirm that a minister is available for when you want it.

I'm glad I can be of help. I know I had tons of questions when planning and didn't get that many answers since not that many people here got married at the Royal or Gran Porto. Happy planning!

When I enquired about the symbolic ceremony at our resort, I ws given the info and the cost was dramatically lower. It was $520 cheaper and then the added judge fees that we would supposedly have to add on now (recent charge added after the fiasco with fake judges), and I think that is another $300. At our resort they call it a 'Symbolic' ceremony, but rather 'Vow Renewal'. Everything that you get with the (legal) wedding ceremony you also get in the vow renewal, except for the actual judge. When booking our wedding date, this made thing a lot easier as well, since we didn't have to make sure that the judge was free to do our wedding when we wanted it! Now we can also plan our ceremony time rather than waiting to find out when we get there.

I know that many people have or will be getting legally married months before the symbolic ceremony, but what is the norm? I was hoping to do it right before we left, like the night before we fly down to DR.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm a bit annoyed. I figured that the cost would be cheaper for us to do the symbolic ceremony too (and it will in terms of not doing the translations), but our hotel has

1) Legal with Judge

2) Symbolic with minister/officiant

3) Symbolic with your own supplied officiant (or a friend or relative).

Only #3 saves us $400 USD. #1 and 2 are the same price. I thought bloodwork would cost about $200, so I'm surprised there isn't a small dent in cost. frown.gif

NOw I just have to figure out if I'm ok with FI's brother doing the ceremony for us or if I want to keep spending the $400 for some minister to perform the symbolic ceremony for us...

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
