Hi there! I'm just searching the site because I have this same question.. have you found anything out between EDR and Seaside?? We are debating on maybe doing one of those for the honeymoon (wedding at Dreams Tulum). Let me know if you have any info!

Thanks, Leah

Hi Ladies!

There is a sticky thread in the top of this forum that has a bunch of slideshows from various weddings in the Mayan. There are quite a few on EDR and one on EDSS. They would be great for you, Rebecca to look at for questions relating to the wedding. But they are also great to get a feel of the resort.

Have you guys both checked out tripadvisor for their reviews on the resort? I found that really helpful in choosing between my top 4 resorts (EDR, EDSS, excellence and Royal PDC)? In general this is what I have gathered:

EDSS is smaller, less restaurants and pooler, but I understand is more relaxed and laid back then EDR. and is located past Playa del carmen, by I think about 25 minutes. EDSS does not do as many weddings as EDR

EDR, is bigger, has more selection for rooms, including the Casitas, has more restaurants and pools. Although this is still a very relaxing resort (definitly not a party resort) it has a little more happening in the evening then EDSS. and is located about 10/15 minutes north of Playa

Both resort's wedding coordinators are from the same company: Lomus Travel - so you can expect to have pretty much the same choices and experiences from that end.

Let me know if you have any more questions! Happy planning

I am using Destinationweddings.com and the travel agent told me that originally the EDSS was the place you would go to to visit your Mexican family in that it was very authentic. Then the EDR was build and that is where you would go to visit your RICH Mexican family! She said that since EDSS has been renovated they are pretty much the equal, and it is just a matter of preference.

I do remember her saying that the beaches are different at both locations, but I can't remember specifics.

I've been trying to make the same decision myself, and I think the major swaying factor for me is the "whales" (sand bags) on the beach at Royale. If you look at pics on trip advisor showing the beaches at the two properties the sand bags are pretty disruptive to the view at Royale, whereas at seaside suites it looks like there may only be a few sand bags at the edges of the beach, not right in front of you runnig parallel to the beach. At the moment, I'm leaning towards Seaside Suites for our wedding. I've read on TripAdvisor it has a more boutique feel because of its size. Also, there is some coral and rocks in the beach, but that makes for good snorkeling conditions. Royale has the same coral and rock complaints I believe. No surf issues at Seaside, but Royale has intense surf so you have to swim amongst the sand bags in calm water. Also, I think there are still several bars and something like 5 restaurants at Seaside, so there's still a pretty good selection of restauraunts. I've also read Royale has a huge property (they even have golf cart shuttles to cart people around) and more difficulty getting into restaurants, therefore it feels more like a mega resort.

Hope that helps. Good luck with your planning!

Originally we wanted to honeymoon in Mexico and I was looking at both of these resorts too. I like that EDSS is smaller, and from pictures, I preferred the beach there. It seems EDR gets the popular vote for weddings - maybe because it is larger?

My TA suggested EDSS over EDR, saying they both offer pretty much the same amenities, but EDSS would be more relaxing and private for our needs. She did suggest that the more swimmable beach would be at EDSS. Not sure if she's been there herself, but that's what she told me. If I had to choose one for my honeymoon it would be EDSS.

I wanted lots of options for my guests - room classes, food, drinks etc.

I felt EDR had that more then EDSS

The size at EDR allows more wedding options too then EDSS!

I also wanted to allow people to have their own vacation and the whole week notto be about the wedding. ERD is bigger so people can move around. If we did EDSS we would take up the whole resort!!! hahaha.

We have lots of friends comming (20-30's) and wanted some night life - EDSS has none! EDR has a bit, not a lot either, but is closer to PDC then EDSS and as such, cabs would be cheaper etc.

EDR looks amazing!

The only thing that was deterring me from EDR was the beach.

EDR has the sand bags ...

However, I have been assured

1) it is a large beach and NOT all of it has the bags,

2) that it is still very swimable and you can snorkel etc

3) that the bags are actually nice as they break the big waves and in turn allow for more swimable days

I also think - less attraction to the beach means less people in bikinis in the background to my pictures!!! tee hee.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
