Riu Montego Bay

Recommended Posts

I tried searching for any postings about this resort and ran into a few problems, so I thought I'd just go ahead and try a post on it.

Riu has a new resort opening up in Montego Bay on Aug 29 this year. Has anyone looked at or considered it? I know ROR is popular and seems to do a good job. It's just the 2 of us so we don't qualify for the free weddingsmile27.gif but we'll manage.

FI wants to go to Cancun, but I'm still secretly hoping for Jamaica and think this resort might be a good one to convince him. The price for the first 6 months its open is unbelievable. Cheaper than we could do Cancun, PV or Cabo for.

I e-mail the resort and they wonâ€t start booking weddings till the resort is open, which worries me a little…but we might just book the trip now as the price is too good to pass up. If any of you Riu brides have any helpful suggestions, Iâ€d love to hear them.

I seen this resort on the Riu site and it looks amazing. It may be a good option but I would be a little leary as it opens in August. It might take a bit to work out their glitches and such.
If your wedding was in say mid to late 09, I think it would be perfect. Doesn't hurt to look into it.

I was going to look into when we were originally planning. However, with my Jan 2009 date my travel agent (and some people here) advised me against it as it would be too close to opening. The risk of it not being done in time or still having parts under construction was too great. Not to mention, the wedding coordinator would have less experience and things may not go as smoothly.

So I guess it would depend on when you are thinking. If its later in 2009 I would say defintely consider it! The Rius are nice and it would be awesome to be in Montego Bay and avoid the commute to either Ocho Rios or Negril. Plus if its just the 2 of you, I think there would be less stress in the wedding planning portion as you can do what you want and wont have the added stress of guests. Just my two cents though. If you are really considering it I would maybe contact a TA and see if they can get more details for you. (Mine said she could probably get more info back when I was looking... but since we decided not to, I never got it)

We are looking at late Feb early March 2009. The resort is set to open Aug 29 2008...so it should have about 6 months to work out the final bugs before we get there. It's just the 2 of us, so kinks in the wedding planing are less likely to be a problem with us. Plus I am not really concerned with things like flowers, cake, etc. I just want to relax, have fun, and come home with decent pictures to show the family.

I did check and if the resort is not upen in time for our trip, then we will be sent to one of the other Rius on the island instead...which is not a bad option either. Also the travel insurance we might select has some coverage for that as well.

Right now it looks like our wedding date will be either Feb 28 or March 2, 2009. We are likely to put the deposit down in the next few days. I might be the first Riu Montego Bay bride on the board!

I say go for it! It sounds perfect for the two of you since you will be more laid back about any "just opened" kinks! And I want you to go so you can tell us all about it when you're back, LOL!! :) I would love to check out this resort as well!

I saw this RIU on my way to ROR last month, one side looked almost done but the other side was still more like a frame of a hotel. It's purple, just like the ROR. I say go for it! If it's not ready you still get a fantastic vacation so what's to lose?

The hotel is purple? Can't wait to see that, it's my fav color. Before we decided to elope I was thinking of shades of purple for my colors.

One quick question I have for all you ROR brides. Do any of you have the photo package info? They don't have any of that for MoBay yet and I wanted to get a general idea of budget.

That's gotta be soo exciting. I am sure you will have a great wedding.
There are several packages at ROR..it all depends what you want.
Go the riu.com site and look at weddings. It gives you a rundown on all the packages.

On my home computer I have a copy of the 2008 Photoshop prices (I think). I don't beleive that is posted on the Riu website... so let me know your email and I can forward it to you. As for the wedding packages and upgrade costs... that should all be on the Riu website (weddingsbyriu.com).

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
