I can show up and play my trombone. Haven't done it since junior high, but I'm sure I can belt out something pretty :)

call some of the music schools - like manhattan school of music and see if you can get a student to do it for substantially cheaper since they are not yet a professional. i bet you can find some good ones. i have a very good friend who graduated from there last year and she could probably recommend someone if you want me to ask, just let me know.
The going rate for a piano player in Missouri to play for receptions is $50 per hour. We're having one at Mandy's reception. Good idea, Maura, to call the music schools.

I believe you'd be able to make this work if you do it in the back yard & cater it like Alyssa is thinking...
i agree - the backyard is probably the most economical thing to do! AND if fil's disagree and want something uppity, you can say, "well my dw was going to be exactly what you now want, just in another place, so shove it beotch!"
but that's just the bitch in me talking.

i'm going to read the rest of this thread now.

ok now that i've read the rest, i have a couple of lousy ideas that come with good intentions:

if you can push the ceremony time back to after 'lunch time' you can just skip a meal and invite people back for cocktails and cake.

if the backyard has any shade, you don't need a tent. you can rent chairs, or set up picnic blankets.

on the same picnic note, you could just have a big picnic in the backyard with sandwiches and whatnot - totally different, kinda romantic, definitely casual.

i say bring in a whole shitload of food from carmines. one dish will feed 30-40 people, lol.

the only thing you'd have to worry about with planning it outdoors is that you can't really have a raindate for a wedding...unless it's a celebration of your wedding, in which case it doesn't have to be on the same day.

in any case, i have a plain, elbow length white veil w/ pencil tip edging. i also have a headband (pics in my planning thread), and a groom that you can borrow. if i think of anything else that i didn't toss/sell, i'll let you know!

Let's say you have the church at 2pm then do the event from 4 to 8 - that kind of thing - we can really get creative with $10K - with his parents $5 and a little more from them, you and James could do $2K or $3??
I agree with Alyssa. I think this is the best. I don't see a reason to have lunch at a restaurant then moving the whole group over to your FIL's home for a party.

Have a catered cocktail reception. And I don't think its tacky to let them know that you would rather use the money for this.

On a side note, I have never ever been to a RD ever. Its just not common in the Latino culture (well at least not in mine).

Thats so exciting your getting married Glenda... I wish I had something for you to borrow but Im getting married around the same time....

Wow just think with Melissa playing the piano, Morgan playing the trombone.... I will freshikn up my skills on the recorder from 3rd grade, theres no need for a piano lady!!!

Ok but seriosly....

Is there any way you are able to push the time back? I know you have already done it a couple times. If you take the last time at three.... You could do Hor Dervs (sp) and cocktails at the back yard... Or if they dont want that in their house what about like a pretty park... I know that maybe tricky but alot of times you can reserve space. OR....... F it and just elope!

I have a dress and a veil and free shipping from DH :P

The dress would need cleaning though as the fire dancers left a smudge on the side...the veil is beautiful with beaded trim. I paid $150 for it and would love someone to use it again before the moths get it! Anyhoo, do your thing but if you're interested let me know :)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
