I hate writing papers

Recommended Posts

Writing papers was my speciality in college. lol I think. I had to write so many but then again I was an English major. (Don't judge my posts- I've forgotten how to spell since I haven't got my learn on for the last 5 years.) I even wrote one drunk and still got a B. That's just sad that it's my one proud moment.

Hang in there girl! Nearly done. Next thing you know, you will be like me and wanting to write something intelligent! I miss school/learning.

here is a gem i dug up from last semester. it was their midterm assignment.

here is what the assignment was:

You will write a 750-word story based on the Census data regarding the Hispanic population in Chicago/Cook County/Illinois (which i gave them in class, as well as access to an excel file with the data), as well as using a minimum of one other data source and a minimum of two quoted sources. This means you need to talk to a minimum of two actual people. The topic is how the Hispanic population boom is having an effect on public education in Chicago. You will attach a source list to the final version.

And here is the garbage I received (please keep in mind there are 2 prerequisite courses to enroll in my course when you read this, and keep in mind this is supposed to be journalism, not a research paper, it should sound like it belongs in the newspaper.):

Hispanic Education in Chicago

The Hispanic population is on a constant growth in Chicago. With the growth of the Hispanic population it is having an effect on education.

In Illinois the total population as of 2005 reached 12,763,371 people. 1,826,283 are Hispanic. The Hispanic growth rate has increased since 2005. With this constant growth Hispanics are now becoming the majority ("Chicago").

Chicago is the third largest city in the United States. In Chicago the population in Cook County has reached 5,330,123 people. Out of the Cook County's population 1,188,672 are Hispanic, according to Chicago Racial Demographics. That is 22% of Chicago's population which is a little less than a forth of the population. Hispanics are now becoming one of Chicago's largest minority groups ("Chicago").

According to the Chicago Tribune, Chicago's Population reached 2,870,000 people. 831,253 people are Hispanic, according to the Chicago Tribune. This means 29.6 % are Hispanic and that's over a forth of the population. They also noted that the numbers do not add up correctly ("Chicago").

Since 1980, Chicago has been a major port for immigration. Most of Chicago's population is foreign. For existing reasons people immigrate for work. Many Mexicans came to work in Chicago to work in the steel industry. A lot of people also came to live in Chicago to escape political turmoil from their homeland. This is one reason why majority of the immigrants in Chicago are Hispanic.

This has significant political ramifications with the shift in demographics. However, this also affects the educational system as well. Many Hispanics send their children to public schools. In the year 2005, there were 350,000 Hispanics were enrolled in public schools, which was 15 percent of the Hispanics. According to Benjamin Bryant 55.5 % of Hispanics had only completed high school.

In 2001, Hispanics had low text scores and performing very poorly in school. This became a concern to public officials, Illinois educators, and also business leaders because Hispanics population grew to 70 % in Illinois. Governor Ryan launched a program called Project Impact. This was designed to help Hispanics improve their education and to decrease the drop out rate.

"Over the past 25 years, statistics show that Latinos have had the highest dropout rate of any ethnic group in America," Governor Ryan said. "With the fifth-highest Hispanic population in the country, Illinois is getting hit especially hard by this trend."But that is going to change. We are launching this program to make certain that Latino students in Illinois have the opportunity and support they need to get a good education." (" Illinois.gov")

According to the Census Bureau, 10% of all students enrolled in college are of Hispanic origin. While only 6% actually graduate with a four year degree. These numbers are still below the national demographic that show that Hispanics comprise 12.5% of the total US population. Because of the rising cost of education, the largest concentration of Hispanics in higher education is in community colleges and other two-year institutions. The National Center for Educational Statistics reports that 9% of all associate degree recipients are Hispanic, according to Joseph Carrillo. (hispanicprwire)

It is predicted that in the year of 2020 one in four kids will be Hispanic. Hispanics will out number every other demographic group and that would make this the largest group in education. This is why it is very important for Hispanics to do better in school. This also makes a big impact because with Hispanics becoming the larger racial group they now have a chance to set standards in education that other minority groups have to meet. ( cnn.com.education)

It is also important for Hispanics to improve in their education because many jobs are basing requirements on Hispanics. One of the most common languages now is Spanish. Even in public schools, they are teaching Spanish because soon that will be the dominant language and the U.S might have to rely on Hispanics being the majority in the educational system as far as teaching. You can't rely on someone who has no education to teach someone else.

Nicole XXXXX, who is originally from Chicago, but parents from Mexico, is one of many Hispanics who has experienced a couple of hardships due to lack of education. "I remember when I would go to school and I had work to do and needed help. I could not ask my parents for help because they didn't understand English and they didn't even finish high school themselves."

"Everywhere we went I had to go with them so I can translate what people were saying. Since then their English is much better because my sisters and myself speak English and we help them." Many Hispanic Families are faced with the same situation but there are more Hispanics that are very fluent in the English language today.

Lisette XXXX, 22, is a student at XXXXX. "My parents forced my sister and me to do well in school. My dad worked and my mother stayed at home. My father speaks English but my mother does not, however, she new when I wasn't doing well in school and I went to a Chicago public school. She pushed me to do well and I graduated from high school and I have a scholarship." "I'm glad my parents pushed me because my sister and I are the fist to finish high school and go to college in our family."

haha- does she know what a complex sentence is? I remember in linguistics we had a sentence structure break down detailing the types of sentence each grade level should be able to write. Complex-compound sentences are obviously out of this girls league. I'm guessing she's at the 5th-6th grade level. Or maybe she was drunk?

Maura- I didn't know you taught college classes. I hope my professors aren't secretly laughing at me on the professor forum. haha

my 5 yr old cousin can articulate sentences better than this student could write. it was particularly sad because this is the 3rd paper she turned in to me before i told her to drop the course or id have to fail her. i made her go to the departmental writing tutor to correct her first and second paper, and she was also required to go to the writing center to get help BEFORE turning this in -- which was clear to me she did not go to the writing center because none of the tutors wouldve told her this was acceptable to turn in. essentially, she wrote the way she talked. my FI nicknamed her "ghettolicious" haha because one of her other papers was written COMPLETELY in vernacular. it is one thing to talk that way, i am not judging that, but when you expect to have a career in writing, you cannot write the way you speak.

Aye yi yi...

Yeah, I feel bad for my teacher. She has 50 8 page papers to grade within like 5 days of us turning them in. She says they take about an hour each.

I think it would be funny being a foreign language teacher. My major was Spanish and I remember the stories our professors would tell us. People who obviously used online translation sources. Sometimes these turn out hilarious! I just revised FI's Span. I Presentation and I was in awe at what crap he found off of BabbleFish or whatever that site is...

Can't wait for my last day of classes thise semester-May 5th..I will have to go out for Cinco de Mayo drinks afterwards.
Good luck getting your work done, you will feel so much better once you get it done.
Damn girl, good luck to you too! cheers.gif Let me know how the 20 page paper goes. What's it on?

My current paper is in Interdisciplinary Studies. Min. of 6 Peer Reviewed Journal Articles for Sources. We have to take a real world problem that can best be looked at by 3 or more disciplines rather than one. My topic has to be related to the course theme of Pandemics. This is what I chose:
How has the SARS virus impacted the travel and tourism industry?
The 3 disciplines I am examining in relation to this are Economics, Psychology and Government. We then need to integrate these disciplines and come up with a new solution or way of looking at the problem. I'm still not sure on this integration stuff. It's tougher than it sounds. Maybe I should have just stuck with Spanish - I only had 3 classes left to graduate... ugh.
