Why is airfare to Cancun so outrageous? Could a TA help?

Recommended Posts

This does not look good ladies! The reason I picked the RM for my wedding is precisely because its USUALLY really cheap from Houston and only 2hrs away!!

Now, I feel screwed.

So of course the 80 or so guests I am expecting haven't booked yet hoping the airfare will go down.

I do however have some guests who are booking through vivaaerobus from Austin. Some are just planning to drive to Austin and then take the direct flight. Others are flying southwest to Austin ($88 RT) and then taking vivaaerobus the rest of the way. You can't beat vivaaerobus' fares...about $175 RT with taxes. Just know it is extremely low budget. You have to walk on the runway to get to the plane, you have to pay for a coke, water etc etc. But considering it is sooo cheap and everything else is sooo expensive, I think it's a great deal! And it's a reliable airline, very popular in Mexico.

Same for me. That is why I picked RM. I was expecting things to be much cheaper for our guests. I'm glad I went with a cheap hotel too so at least that helped. Most guests paid $700-$800 for 3-4 nights from houston. Really not bad for everything included. But last summer you could get it for $500-$600.

I just made it clear to my guests that airfare had gone up a lot & the trip was now $200+ more than we planned on. I emphasized that we do not expect anyone to go- only go if they had the money to spend on a vacation & wanted to. I'm thrilled with our 28 guests. It's really the number I wanted.

You have to pay for your food on many of the major airlines now anyway. I wish vivaaerobus flew out of houston.

have you checked to make sure it's 175 with the fees? there are a lot of fees.

I just started pricing tickets for a wedding in Cabo and I am afraid everything is going to go up... I was just told by a BP gas station owner that gas here may hit $7 a gallon... $7 dollars... He said he thought crude oil would hit $180 a barrel. If I were you I wouldn't wait too long. Best of luck. wink.gif

My wedding is in November as well, so I am hoping that the prices will go down for our guests if we wait. I got scared that we wouldn't be able to get a nonstop flight if we waited any longer so I bit the bullet and bought the tickets for my FH and I last Friday. We are paying $998 for the both of us from Detroit to Cancun. My TA was only about $10 cheaper than Orbitz.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one in this boat. I have encouraged my guests to not feel obligated to come to the DW, but if they are they might want to buy tickets now. I'm afraid if they wait that things are only going to get worse & my guest list will become non-existent. I just have my fingers crossed...it's either going to be a big bash or an intimate affair. Either way I won't complain.

I'm in the same boat as everyone - I'm afraid friends won't be able to come. I am going to encourage them to consider heading down to Austin to get Vivaaerobus tickets as well, or using vayama.com which seemed to be cheaper too. My Fiance and I only paid $250 each for our tickets - now they are over $400!!

Good luck ladies!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
