Looking for similar yet less expensive version of this dress

Recommended Posts

I am torn...saving money versus the dress...

One of the reasons we chose to do the DW was to save money. Therefore, I can't justify spending a large amount of money on my dress, even though I am ever so tempted. I was browsing around on the weekend and absolutely fell in love with Sottero & Midgley SSM5049.

So I came to my #1 resource BDW and noticed that some of you have already tried on this dress. By chance while dress shopping, have you you seen something similar but less expensive? I have yet to go dress shopping and am afraid if I walk into a bridal shop without knowing there are comparable dresses with a smaller price tag, I'll just have to say the hell with the budget.

Sottero & Midgely & Maggie Sottero have tons of gowns; many of their dresses are similar to this design. You still have some time, so you can wait a few more months to look for another dress & shop around for pricing. Both of these labels have websites, take a look at their other designs & pricing, maybe you can find a similar design for a few hundred bucks less by shopping around.

In the end, make sure you buy the dress you really love.

How much it too much? There are websites that also price match + a discount. I bought my Casablanca on e-bay as a sample dress from a salon.. sometimes you'll find something at a local salon when the new styles come in too.

Also, I found a bridal salon in a less expensive area (a few towns in the other direction) and the price difference was $300 (for a Maggie) so it pays to call around.

Have you tried on the dress?

Lizz, thank you for looking.

I am looking to stay in the $300-$600 range...which is really hard. I think I am going to end up giving in.

I don't feel comfortable buying a previously worn dress. Afraid I'll buy it and there will be something wrong with it. Also I am sure if I buy online, I will get nailed with duty charges when it crosses the US-Can boarder.

I am going to keep searching...there has to be something similar out there.

Haven't tried it on, afraid if I do there will be no going back. I know my shape and that the dress will work.

To my knowledge, only one store in Nova Scotia carries Sottero & Midgley...the next closest is in the next province 3 hr drive and I've heard the owner of that place is so horrible to deal with. I do have plans to head to the US in the fall to visit my MOH and to pick out her dress. I will definitely look when I am there. The prices you girls get in the US are so much better.

My gown is Sottero Midgley and very similar to that. I initially found it at a little boutique and fell in love with the dress but not the price. I ended up going to a "lower end" bridal shop and while they did not carry the dress they were able to order it for me and it was $250 less than the boutique. So I say try going to other places and see if you can find it cheaper. Also the Sottero Midgley dresses come in a few fabric selections. Going with the cheapest fabric can cut the cost as well.

I would at least go try it on first. I had found what I thought was my dream dress. I went to 6 different stores in 3 states trying to find it. FInally one of them called me to tell me they got a sample in. Well, on my body, it looked awful! Not flattering at all! SO, I waited so long to find "the dress" that I didn't order one for the wedding. Now, my dress isn't due to arrive until May 25th and we leave on JUne 15th! I'm now having to pay out the a$$ for alterations because I had to find a place that could rush them.

Thant being said, I wasn't trying to talk you out of your dream dress. I just wanted to share what happened to me. It was heart-breaking that "my dress" really wasn't.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
