Getting "married" before DW?

Wow. you guys have me thinking.... the thought hadn't crossed my mind.

 

How much of a headache would I be saving myself? Approx how much time and $?

I'm legally getting married before I leave to my Cabo wedding too. We wanted to keep our original dating anniversary so it will work out for us. Like alot of other people, we will keep the legal ceremony a secret.

For us we saved approx $600 to have a symbolic ceremony vs. legal. We also didn't have to do the blood work, document translation, etc. It was quite nice.

FI was all for it at the beginning but I was very stubborn, because I thought it would really ruin the magic of the wedding day. Now I think it really won't.

 

In fact, what is really pushing me over the edge to change our DW legal wedding into a symbolic one is the fact that I really don't like the legal ceremony text that the judge will read. It doesn't do it for me, KWIM? It'll be in Spanish and the words don't mean anything to me/us.

Whereas, if we do the symbolic ceremony, we can have the officiant (whoever it may be) read whatever we want, in English.

 

We won't save much on our package, unless we have a friend perform the ceremony (then we save $400), but we save a lot of hassle and some money with getting all our docs translated here before, bloodwork down there, and then the waiting for the official certificate and then getting that translated in Canada. Phew!

hmmm. I'm really leaning towards this now. FI really wanted to marry in Vegas orginially so I think we can now have both!!!

 

This morning I received an email confirming that the judge will be available (at the wrong time though - I'll take it as a sign )))

 

Since I haven't sent in my deposit, I'll try to change it to symbolic.

I worried at first it would take away from the "magic." That's why we got married in Vegas and made it super silly.

 

BUT trust me, it doesn't at all. You are still a bundle of nerves. I kept telling myself "don't be silly. you are already married- no reason to be nervous." Didn't work!

 

I was so in love that day and it felt like our true wedding- for me it actually is. Who cares where we signed the documents to make it legal. The day in Mx is where DH and I seriously looked at each other and made the commitment to be husband and wife.

I think this is our plan too! We are probably going to do it on May 1st and then our DW is May 15th.

Thanks for saying this, Rachel. It totally reassures me. And it sounds like you really made the right choice for yourselves. Hopefully we will too.

I have to call my aunt now and see if she would be up for 'marrying' us. The funny thing is that she actually is a minister and used to live in Mexico City... I still don't think she has power to marry down there.
