I'm starting nutrisystem

rach i agree with lauren, anyone i know who has done ww and changed the way they look at food has done really well. i have never done it (but need to desparately) but my mom has been on and off of it over the years. when she sticks to it, keeping track of her points, etc, she does awesome. she gets in control. then life happens and when she doesnt watch and keep track of what/how much she is eating, she gains it back. BUT im not trying to sound negative, what im trying to say is that it really works and if you can just make that small change to track what and how much you are having, and attend the meetings (btw they have online too) then it will work. its so motivating and having to weigh in really keeps you in check. its like you set mini goals each week instead of looking at the long term.

ps you can totally be lazy! all you need to do is get a little booklet with the points and you can still eat whatever whenever. you just need to manage how you do it! keep track of it.

We have WW at work and we get a special discount. I paid for it and did it for a year and didn't lose one pound. I tracked too. I really think I can't live by the "eating anything you want within moderation" rule.

 

I was going to try nutrisystem cause my doctor said it follows the glycemic index so the meals would be perfect for me. Unfortunately (from the sounds of it) the meals aren't even good tasting. So that won't work for me. I can't eat bad food. Like I'd rather eat good food and be fat than eat bad tasting food and be unhappy and skinny. I've done that and I was MISERABLE and cried all the time cause I felt deprived. It sounds really pathetic but food really is that important to me. For over a year I didn't eat ANY flour or sugar (like I'm suppose to) and I lost a lot of weight. However, Steve and I fought a lot because I was always grouchy. I cried when we went to restaurants because I had such a hard time not eating what I really liked and picked some crappy spinach salad instead. It was rough. And then if I cheated and had one "splurge" meal I had a hard time sticking to my diet for the rest of the time.

 

God I'm sounding even more pathetic!

rachel, i say this with the utmost love and respect for you, but there is no miracle solution! despite how awesome it would be, there is no way that excess weight is just going to up and leave w/o assistance - believe me, i was waiting and waiting and waiting for it to go! no diet (jenny craig, nutrisystem, sacred heart) or lifestyle change (ww) will help if you're unmotivated. the unmotivated weeks are the worst obstacles! my current motivation is BIL's wedding in october. after that, i'll need something new.

i'm sure i'm not telling you anything that you don't already know....but it's your body and your health. no one else can help but you!

 

again, ETA: when did you do ww? there's a program that used to be called core (called something else now) where you can eat as much as you want of certain foods and only track the other foods. that will be harder if you're lazy, tho, b/c it's a lot of whole grains, and requires more work, imo. the only way that it works for me is if i plan my whole week - make all lunches on sunday night, go food shopping sunday so i know what we'll be having for dinner during the week....

No I know what you are saying Lauren and I don't take offense. I know there isn't a miracle solution but WW offered to much flexibility to me. I'm not suppose to eat flour products or anything with sugar in the first 5 ingredients. So when I did WW, I didn't follow that rule- I just focused on points and didn't lose anything although I strictly followed the diet. I didn't feel deprived. I just didn't think it was a working solution for me.

 

I talked to my doctor and he said that it's because I HAVE to follow the glycemic index very strictly. My body doesn't process food the way that it does for others. I haven't found a way to follow that lifestyle change with success yet. He recommended nutrisystem to me because it's easy meals and follows the glycemic index. I was just bummed to find out that the food isn't good.

 

I do eat WW frozen meals a lot. They DO follow the glycemic index too and I do have some favs. I just don't eat them religiously- like for both lunch and dinner every day. Maybe I should do that since I don't cook!

rach im sitting here with my friend at work and she does really well with the ww meals too. she likes a lot of them, and if she is even semi-religious about it she loses weight. she has lost like 25 lbs in 6 months.

 

i think i would enjoy those more than nutrisystem personally. plus they go on sale at the store all the time, while nutrisystem does not!

 

hmmmmm, what about jenny craig?? have you tried their food?

I haven't tried anything other than WW or watching what I eat like a hawk. The hawking part works- I know that, but like I said before- I was very unhappy. I'd like to find a balance between the two.

 

This is a probably that has just occurred in the last 5 years. I've never had a weight problem. Like Lauren, I'm 5'0 and I was always around 115-120. In the last 5 years, I have gained so much weight and under gone so much testing that it kinda left my doctor confused. Basically, he said my metabolism doesn't exist and I'm pre-diabetic.

 

I guess I know really well by now what I need to eat but the non-cooking makes it difficult. I don't know how to cook that offers me enough variety. LIke I have 5 staple things that I cook. I probably just need to invest in a cookbook that focuses on gluten free recipes and force myself to grocery shop and cook. I was just hoping I could buy my meals pre cooked and have them still taste good. I was willing to pay the $$ for it, but not if it tastes bad!

Weight is such a pia! I have also done well with WW when I really stick to it, I like th flexibility of it. Right before the wedding DH and I ordered Nutri System YUCK!! The food was horrible. I would not suggest eating the frozen WW meals for lunch and dinner they have a loads of sodium. I have not tried this diet Skinny Switch Secret but I saw a commercial on it and was impressed, there was another one too based on the glycemic index but I have not been able to find the site.

there are places that deliver diet food, but around here they are $$! what about starting w/ substitutions in the house? like substitute whole grain pasta and brown rice for regular pasta or white rice? keeping fresh fruits (esp. summer fruits!) and veggies instead of snacks is helpful too.

OR, since i just noticed that you wrote gluten-free, try quinoa (i've been raving about it on fb). it's delish, easy as anything, yummy, and tastes like whatever you cook it w/. right now i'm eating it w/ a veggie stir fry, made w/ soy sauce and hot chili sesame oil. last night, i melted some chocolate chips into it. gluten-free, tasty, high protein!

Quinoa I never heard of it I like trying new things I am going to have to try it.

 

Rachel - do you hate to cook or just that you only cook a couple of things, have you tried taking a cooking class? County colleges usually offer them so does Shoprite at least the one by me.
