I think if it is something that you would like to include in your ceremony it is totally cute and you should have your officiant read a short description of the meaning of jumping the broom so all your guests understand the significance.

The other thing that is really nice about the broom if you do a small one, it can be beautifully decorated and framed as a unique keepsake of your wedding. My friend had hers mounted in a glass case with a picture of her and her husband which now hangs in their house. It's really pretty so I say go for it. It's an AWESOME DIY project!!!
I have thought about it, but we haven't decided yet. I like the idea of framing it with a picture. That is a great idea.

I had an idea this morning...

Since our ceremony location has a couple of steps, what if I have the broom placed at the base of the last step and we jump as we descend? It can maybe be incorporated into more symbolism with the reading...since we'll both cross up and into the gazebo as single people but when we come out ...we jump into our new lives as one? Is that cheesy? I'd have to work on the wording ....

Here's our ceremony location. There is the tiniest step at the very bottom..I figure the broom could be under that?

I really like that idea Savannah! It is sooo not cheesy & it would work perfectly. I also love how the broom came out. You'll definitely have to post pics when you're done decorating it. It will make a nice keepsake for you to bring back home.

offtopic2.gif I can't believe you kept the fab four from us all of this time!!! How could you?? They are adorable!

I like the idea a lot... definitely not too cheesy (or cheesy in a good way). I'm surprised to have found so many other Jewish and Black couples! I'm Jewish and my FI is black. We were going to jump the broom but I got kind of stressed out about finding a broom and decorating it and transporting it but now that I saw your amazing broom we will have to reconsider. Another thing we are doing to honor his background is we are pouring libations. From what I understand pouring of the libation is a traditional African ceremony in which water is poured on the ground in the four directions in remembrance and honor of the couple’s ancestors. During the ceremony we will call out the names of family members that have recently passed, or who could not be there on our wedding day. The ritual is intended to celebrate the coming together of two families. (I really like that element). We are breaking a glass too to honor my background. My FI was joking we could jump over the broom onto the glass. . .now that would be cheesy.

This is a ceremony dating back to the 1600s and derived from Africa.

The "Jumping the Broom" is a ceremony in which the bride and groom, either at the ceremony or at the reception, signify their entrance into a new life and their creation of a new family by symbolically "sweeping away" their former single lives, former problems and concerns, and jumping over the broom to enter upon a new adventure as wife and husband.

Hope this helps
