Wow, what an incredible amount of helpful info to be found here!  My fiance and I are booked at the gazebo for the wedding, cocktail hour and reception on May 21.  We decided to go with the free wedding, as it didn't seem like much more money to pay the extra for the hotel, given the cost of the wedding packages...also, we wanted to choose our own photographer, bouquet, cake, etc, and didn't really want the options that came with the wedding packages.

I'm very lucky to have three guests (one is family) that are professional hair stylists...so, no worries there.  Also, I plan to do my own makeup (I have been researching and shopping for several weeks already :) But, the one outside vendor issue I haven't seen addressed on this forum is the photographer.

Does anyone know, will we have to pay the $350 vendor fee to use an outside photographer?  Has anyone had any luck adding their photographer to the guest list, or finding another way around the vendor fee?

With the photographer--how have people divided up the time?  We have a four-hour package with Blue Lens Caribe.  I was thinking a half hour before the wedding, the wedding, 1-2 hours after and then 1 hour of the reception.  Anyone have suggestions on how to best use the photographer?

Also, what have people experienced as far as guests staying outside of the The Royal?  Can guests staying at the Gran Porto get into the The Royal, or is it true that all individuals not staying at The Royal can only come in for the wedding and reception?  If my family and members of the wedding party can't get in, it will be pretty daunting to not be able to get ready together.

Last, any thoughts on the food choices for the reception? We are having a private reception, and I'm just wondering if anyone has recommendations for the menu?  I keep reading about a cake--tres leches--but this does not seem to be on the menu.

Sorry for the long list questions.  And I'm sure there are more to follow :)

Yes, you do have to pay the 350.00 fee for an outside vendor photographer. What I did to sort of get around it was get a room for him the night of the wedding. It was half the price to do that as opposed to the vendor fee (it also prevented the non- Real resort guest pricing for cocktail, food, toast/cake).

My sister in law and her family (kids) stayed next door at the Gran Porto and we would go over there every other day and on the first night had the Meet and Greet in the Grand Porto Lobby because Royal guests can go anywhere over there, but Gran Porto guests can not go to the Royal unless they are adults and have paid for a pass. One person stayed at the 4-star beach club place and regretted not staying with everyone else at the Royal. For the ceremony and wedding, however, Gran Porto guests can come over without a pass. Children are only allowed at The Royal receptions if you have a private reception (but they cannot come to your room- like flower girl for example). They will also quickly tell the parents to have them shape up if they are throwing tantrums/crying lol (this happened to us with our flower girl lol).

I had ceremony at the Gazebo (Royal), cocktail reception in the garden area (near the gazebo), and reception on the beach in front of the gazebo. It was a nice flow because we changed locations and guests didn't have to wait for setup because each place was different.

We took pictures (husband and i, and then wedding party) during the one hour cocktail reception which was immediately after the ceremony. This provided great flow for our guests because they never had to stand around. We finished our pics right at reception time. We missed out on the cocktail reception, but it didn't really bother me. I will say that if you don't want to miss it, pics before the ceremony might be a good idea ("first look") and also if you are getting married after Daylight Saving Time change in the fall (because you lose the light fast on that side of the resort by the ocean)

I hope that helps!

Hi again everyone. I'm Sarah from Texas/moving to NYC.  I posted months ago, and now that I'm getting closer to the date, I'm working on more details.  I appreciate everyone's advice so much; it's helped us sort out a lot of the details.  I just wanted to add my name to the list, but I will be sure to ask questions when I need to! Thanks again & best wishes to all of you. :)

Hey Royal April Brides!!! I have some critical information - The Gran Porto and the Royal are SELLING OUT!!!! My TA called me today and let me know that she is unable to book any more standard rooms for the Gran Porto or the Royal.  All that is left for the weekend of my wedding (April 1st) are the $700+ a night rooms (yowsa!) For my guests that didn't book, they are now scrounging around. Please let your guests know that April is a very popular time to visit the resorts and you don't want them to miss out.

I must add, I don't know if the selling out thing is exclusive to my TA.  I am assuming that she wouldn't book anyone else for the Royal because she didn't want to risk them being "bumped" to another resort so check with your TA's.  I am a little disappointed with my TA becasue I feel like she should have warned us that the Royal and the Gran Porto were reaching max capacity.

PrettyPig - You were on the ball for all those people waiting for their tax refunds to book!

Diahr,

I knew because I read it on this thread, and it happened to a May2010 Royal bride.

The hotels tend to be SOLD OUT 2-3 months in advanced.  They always "reserve" a bloc of rooms for their timeshare members, my guess is they always have a few room empty (just in case for timeshare people).

You can contact your WC, and see what rate she can offer you and really check if the hotel are in fact selling out.

There are another Real Resort in PDC, less nice, not on the beach, but cheaper and close to the Royal too.  I guess if there are empty rooms at the Gran Porto and Royal when they check in, your guests can request an upgrade.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
