Hi Royal Brides!

So we just got back from 8 days at The Royal in Playa del Carmen. We had a blast and just loved the property. The service is absolutely excellent!!! We’ve been to The Ritz in Hawaii and The Taj hotels in Asia and the service here was even better!

I am very glad that we did a site visit because we found out that the only location that was available on May 7th was the beach area in the main walkway which is not private at all, so we decided to change our wedding date to May 8th (which was the original day I wanted but it was booked at the time).

here's a quick run down on my thoughts after seeing the property and what we have decided so far.....

Wedding locations:

Three beachfront options – 1.) in front of the gazebo (I would prefer this one over the other 2 options) 2.) the main entry area (access from the pool-very busy) and 3.) the beach area in front of the Pelicano restaurant (also next to the public pier). Remember that the beach at The Royal is public so you will have a lot of traffic on the beach.

Gazebo – this was my favorite after visiting The Royal. It is larger than I expected and beautiful (although I do not like the red carpet they put down for the ceremony but you can request to not have it).

I was always set on a barefoot beach wedding but after seeing the beach locations (and seeing 3 beach weddings) we decided to change our wedding date to May 8th and book the gazebo for the ceremony.

Wedding reception:

We saw a number of weddings; however none of them were very large so we didn’t get to see how things are set up for a large beach reception. There was one that had about 15 people and was basic and it still looked nice. We booked the beach area in front of the gazebo for the reception because it is the most private (as private as can be) and the largest beach area. I have to tell you I about had a heart attack when we first saw the beach because it is VERY small in Sept/Oct because of the season. Everyone there swore to me that the beach is much larger in May. I asked to see pictures and it does look like the beach is at least 2 times bigger than it is now. Ivan (DJ) also showed me pictures of a wedding in May last year and it looked fine (and they had 75 people).

So we’ll be having the reception on the beach by the gazebo. We are also reserving two sets of the lounge furniture and the lighted dance floor from Ivan (DJ).

Wedding packages:

We booked the Luxury wedding package.

DJ:

We’ve booked Ivan Gomez. We met with him while down there and were super impressed. He is very professional and extremely nice. He use to work at the royal years ago before starting his DJ business. He now has over 10 DJs working for him and seems to be very busy. I would recommend him because of his professionalism, referrals and cost ($650 for up to 4 hrs).

Food tasting:

Oh my goodness!!! The food at The Royal is just amazing!!! It is almost impossible to choose one out of the three they have you taste but we are going to somehow do it. If they try to charge you extra for the tasting, don’t let them do it. Tell them you already paid your deposit (or entire wedding bill) and it should be included. I do have to admit that the attention and presentation they put into the tasting is worth the extra money if you do end up having to pay for it. They make you feel awesome! And don’t eat anything before you go because it is a ton of food and make sure to take notes. The cake options are great too. We loved the Three milk cake – I know it sounds awful to me but it was fantastic.

Rooms:

We stayed in room 261. it wasn’t ocean view but it was right in front of the lobby and bar area and it was just fine. The rooms are very nice and cold . They showed us the 1 bd master suite and the presidential suite. Both are very nice. We’ll decide when it gets closer on the room for the wedding but honestly we weren’t in there except to sleep and shower. 

Wedding coordinator:

We were assigned Lilly. She is absolutely amazing!!! Everything that I have read on this forum is true. They will do almost whatever it is that you want so don’t stress. I feel 500% better now after meeting her. She knows what she is talking about and makes things happen.

So that was my quick write up of The Royal. We are very happy with our decision to get married at The Royal next year (May 8th, 2010 now). The location (walking distance to 5th ave), food (top notch), service (out of this world) were the main reasons we chose The Royal and after seeing the property in person, we are at ease and very excited.

I’ll be uploading pictures later this week and will post a link to view my google album.

Take care and email me if you have questions: jennie.lewis@gmail.com.

Jennie- Thanks for the review! I'm so jealous that you got a site visit, I don't think it will be in our budget. So it makes me feel better to hear such great reviews!

I have one question, is the central beach location for a reception ok? I know it won't be very private but are there any other bad qualities about it?

Hey - I used the Royal Spa (SpaZul) for my makeup and it was the BEST makeup I have EVER had in my ENTIRE LIFE. Plus it was super quick. They are so good there. I think the name of the woman was Alicia or something similar - ask your WC to book it with her. She older and had black hair - doesn't speak perfect english but totally understands it. I was worried about my hair and makeup going into my wedding day but everyone on this forum reassured me - i am SOOO glad i used them. Plus it was easy to have it right at the spa - and much more relaxing.
If anyone is looking for a cheaper place to get nails done there is this tiny spa right next to the Gran Porto on Constitutional Ave. Its much cheaper and they do a great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just and FYI - the MAC store is WAAAY down 5th ave near the ferry to take to Cozmel. I wouldn't bother.
Just my 2 cents!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
