GAH!
Media always blows things out of proportion. However it is still good to be cautious and gather all the facts and make informed decisions. When SARS hit Toronto it was blown out of proportion too. I remember out of towners wearing masks everywhere in the city.

However, my fiancee's family friend was a doctor who contracted the virus from a patient and sadly died whilst the patient survived. So it does happen. We just have to make sure we are prepared and informed to minimize these types of incidents.

I am a big ball of stress right now. I leave on Friday morning. At least my family and friends who are attending are taking the flu thing in stride and aren't completely freaking out.

I work for the federal governent and my "big wig" boss emailed me yesterday about going, saying I should make alternative plans. I'm getting a lot of grief from management about going to Mexico. They can't tell me I can't go, but they are definately causing me stress. My family is being very supportive. I am trying to get myself to believe that the media is sensationalizing the outbreak. I just hope that it doesn't get worse by Friday.

istephiez: I am also wondering if the resort offers any type of cancellation policy without penalties. I am so close to my arrival that I doubt that they would give a full refund.

Hi LTL leah

My heart is breaking right now for all of us. We have been doing research and making calls but no word even from the hotel thus far to even know what they are willing to do (go figure we have all struggled with speaking to them on a regular day let alone getting in touch with them now in this chaos.) Yesterday I felt like we weren't going to let this take over our lives until next week when we are a week out but we can't escape it so I don't know what we are going to do. Who the hell can resolve this in a day when we don't even know what the hotel would offer. I can't just throw in the towel 2 weeks early if that means everyone loses their money, what the hell!!! We are researching other places but without knowing the policy for the hotel it does us no good cuz its not like we can just lose the money and start over. The other big issue is that if it does get worse that people won't want to get on a plane regardless of where they are going so a new location may not solve this problem.

I assume this week its only going to get worse so I really don't know what to say to you because I can't imagine it will be under control on thursday when u will be packing. I guess it also depends on how many people are in your group. I'm so sorry I don't know what to say esp since you can't even get in touch with the hotel....

This is the cancellation policy on their website, I wonder if they will make any exceptions due to swing flu?

"Due to credit card fees, the equivalent of 10% of the total amount of the reservation will be charged if the reservation is cancelled 15 days prior to the arrival date.

Minimum 2 night charge for reservations cancelled 14-1 day prior to arrival date.

Cancellations made within 24 hrs prior to arrival or no shows are 100% non-refundable.

Some hotels may have specific cancellation policies for reservations during Christmas, New Year and Easter Week. Please request further details when booking."

I'm sorry that you girls are going through this, I don't even know what to say to make you feel better. If it were me I don't think anything would help. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help in any way.

Shannon, what day do you leave? Are you gone yet?

I am so sorry for all of us. Just found out my fiancee's patient is getting married in Mexico in June and most of her guests are backing out now and they would rather lose their money than risk their health. So she is trying to go to the travel agent and do a switch of location. She is stressed out obviously.

My Fi and I talked last night and we decided that...well it's the Flu and it is not in our area so we won't worry about it. If people want to cancel that's their decision, but I have never avoided leaving my house during flu season here so I am not going to start.

I understand that people that are older or have compromised immune systems are at risk...but none of them are coming to our wedding...so really..it's just the flu and it isn't around us...so we will be careful and carry travelers health insurance and go and have a great time. Over 36000 people die of the flu every year, so I am trying to put it in context, not trying to belittle the issues that a lot of brides are having here...I fully understand that they are coming from outside sources.

ltl_leah-

I am so sorry everyone is telling you that you can't go...I have a lot of friends that are not even going emailing me and asking me if I am canceling...which honestly...who does that to a bride right before her wedding?? It is stressful because everyone is projecting their stress on to you..and you don't need it.

I just told my friends "thanks for your concern...but it's the flu and I could get it here or in the US as well...so I have no plans cancel my wedding because of the flu."

Hang in there ladies...hopefully this will pass soon.

Michelle, man...you speak my thoughts EXACTLY...

First off...who does that to a bride?! I just cannot believe the lengths some of our family, who are not attending the wedding in Mexico, are going to try to deter my parents (in particular) from going...SO frustrating.

I've basically been doing the same thing as far as a response "Thanks for your concern, but...I'm on top of the information, and I'm not cancelling my wedding due to the flu".

Like you, I refuse to NOT leave the house during this flu, as I would never stay inside during flu season either...its ridiculous.

Steph and Leah, and anyone else leaving around the same time...I really do think we need to just take a deep breath...and not panic. I guarantee in a week, maybe two max, this will have all blown over, and won't even be the 5 o'clock news headline anymore...

Just remember...take hygenic precautions...Purell your hands often...but this flu has not been reported in the area we will be travelling to...and right now, our odds fair more in our favor to be in Playa, than to stay in Canada or the US! Crazy, but true.

Oh...and I leave on Saturday at 6AM!!! cheesy.gif

I also heard from our TA today, that doctors studying the influenze strain, have reported that it is dying in high heat; it not able to sustain itself. They are even saying that some of the earliest reported cases are healing quicker, when subjected to higher temperatures. Food for thought...

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
