Spanish 101

Recommended Posts

Hey!!

I'm working on a Spanish 101 document to give to our guests.

I am building around Debbie's Caribean Resort Reviews already made Translation Sheet. There are some words... phrases I want to add and I was wondering if anyone knows of a site that not only translates the words but also writes how to pronounce the words? Like Debbie has on her sheet??

Example:

How are you? Como esta usted KOH-moh ehs-TAH OOS-THE-dh

Thanks so much!!!!

i'd be careful on the pronunciation guides you use -- for example the "us-the-dh" that you posted above is the Spaniard pronunciation, not the Mexican pronunciation.

It all comes from this site:
Spanish Words and Travel Phrases and how to say them - Debbie's Caribbean Resort Reviews

Is Spaniard the language in the Dominican? That's where I'm going... ??

perhaps im biased because im a spanish speaker, but i dont like that list you linked to above. things like "mi nombre es" is technically gramatically correct but i dont know anyone who would really say that... instead, you say "me llamo" which literally translates to "i call myself"

from what i know, dominican spanish is similar to puerto rican spanish. neither of those pronounces certain words like spaniard (castillian) spanish. Castillian spanish is typically what people learn in school in the U.S., however there are subtle differences between castillian spanish and mexican spanish --- case in point, a few weeks ago i was speaking in spanish with my FI about which elevator to use to take our groceries upstairs, and i mistakenly used the word "acensor" instead of "elevador" -- my FI gave me the funniest look and asked me "de donde eres? españa?"

i dunno, maybe the other spanish speakers can chime in here. the list isnt terrible but the pronunciation guide isnt completely correct on some of the items.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
