Seattle area meetup??!!

I know you can call ahead and hold a table. We might want to do that just to be safe. I've never had a problem getting a seat - but ya never know.

 

Just an FYI - I will be in trial next week but should be there around 6:45 or 7.

Is this the kind of place you can bring a book and sit and have a drink by yourself while you wait for others to show up, or is it more like crowded hipster joint where I would feel akward by my bookish self? I don't mind going early to get us a spot if we have to, but not if I'll look like a retard

Everybody loves Linda's (and Linda's King's Hardware in Ballard, too), and Smith's first night was packed full and concomitantly loud. Smith is less raucous old-West saloon, more dark hunt-club pub, with wainscoting and doors ("LIBRARY" in distressingly off-center letters) salvaged from the renovation of Garfield High School (go Bulldogs!). The taxidermied birds: creepy and wonderful (the goose over the bar is already everybody's favorite, but they're overlooking the spoonbill whose case is inset in the north wall). The drawing of the child on the menu: also creepy and wonderful. The chef is from Licorous, making the food situation extremely promising: deviled eggs, fried duck leg, devils on horseback (dates stuffed with blue cheese wrapped in bacon: already everybody's favorite). You can get a Rainier tallboy ($2) or a pint of St. Bernardus Abt 12 ($. Everybody's happy."

You wouldn’t recognize Smith, the latest brainchild of owner Linda Derschang (owner of Viceroy, King’s Hardware and Linda’s), as the sad-sack restaurant-space-of-a-thousand-closures that the address has been over the last decade or so. Her touch is so sure that Smith already has the patina of a long-standing barroom, complete with Derschang signatures such as creepy taxidermy and dark, rough woodwork. For food, Derschang brought on chef Gordon Wishard (formerly of Licorous, Vios and The Harvest Vine—and, for disclosure’s sake, an old friend and colleague), who’s showing his pubby British side here with mysteriously named dishes, including devils on horseback (dates wrapped in bacon, $6), brawn (head cheese, $7) and trotters (pig’s feet, $9). The soft trotter meat is shredded, covered in a pancetta vinaigrette and tucked into a crépinette patty ($9) bound with caul fat (a lacy membrane from the pig’s abdomen), which in turn is served with a pancetta vinaigrette and sliced roasted peaches. The result is tasty, but seriously unctuous—I didn’t get really into it until I started slapping some mustard on each bite to cut through the richness. This lushness is something of an issue at Smith—it also crops up in the house potted cheese, a sort of beery, buttery cheese spread, and a pork (shoulder) sandwich ($, served on a pillowy brioche bun. I’d like to see more oddball British relishes, chutneys and pickles to offset the suppleness of it all. The house-cut fries—made of sweet potatoes ($5) or russets ($4), are above reproach, and should be eaten in vast quantities with a pint of Polish Black Boss porter ($6). Dinner daily.

You are a doll Abby - I'm sure it would be un-lame if you were to drink & read while waiting for the rest of us working stiffs. Depending on traffic, I can most likely get there about the same time as you...so we can drink & read to eachother!!

right on! then we can try and pick out who we think J-M and Kris are when they walk in and pretend to be longtime friends to trick them and make them think we're not who they are meeting. and then crack-up over it when we picked the wrong person anyways

You can totally read and chill alone at this place. If my trial finishes when I think it will I think I'll be able to be there by 6:30ish. 7 will be the latest.
