platinum e ring, white gold wedding ring???? help!

Recommended Posts

so i finally found a wedding ring that looks awesome with my e ring!!! yeay!! (will post pics on thursday when i get it)

anyway, i bought it in white gold.... and my e ring is platinum. The sales guy told us that there isn't an issue with the two different metals being next to each other. and that they both have to be "refinished" but just in different ways.

however, I've heard from other jewelers that it's not good to put the different metals next to each other because the white gold with scratch the crap out of the platinum. I told this to the sales guy at Jareds and he said that they tell you this in an effort to sell you a higher cost ring, and that it realy doesn't matter.

So we bought the white gold ring. We can always change it to platinum if we want to.

Anyway, does any one know what the truth is? Does it matter, or is it really just a sales tactic to get you to buy platium again?

I know white gold is a lot softer so maybe it is partially true. But the jewelers we have talked to have also said that white gold is also easily polished and buffed. Kind of sounds like it is a sales tactic. If the white gold can be polished so easily why would you need to buy the platinum?

I think it's the other way around. platinum is softer & easily dinged up. But a jeweler can buff it & remove the scratches. White gold doesn't scratch as easy, but it loses it's rhodium coating & needs to be redipped every year or two. I decided on white gold because it's less expensive, lighter weight, and easy to maintain. A rhodium dip takes about an hour & cost less than $30. I was told buffing the platinum would cost more than that. But, a platinum ring with some scratches doesn't look as bad as a white gold ring with a worn out coating. So the maintenence wouldn't be as necessary.

So I'm not sure how you decide which is best. For me it was that I prefer a lighter weight ring. I know some people who like heavy. I think jewelers push platiunum as far superior because they make more commission.

Palladium sounded great to me, but wasn't available for my setting. For a men's ring I like tungsten.

i'm with you morgan. i would have preferred a white gold ring, but my ring only came in platinum. sometimes i wish we would have had it made in white gold, but at the time i wasn't sure exactly which ring i was getting.

I have a platinum e-ring and my matching band will be in white gold. I just didn't really want to spend the extra money on a platinum band and as long as I don't have them soldered together I can just clean them separately.. I don't think it's really a big deal...

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
