Question about stringing up paper lanterns

Hello everyone,

I am trying to figure how to string up paper lanterns for an outdoor reception at the Hilton. Has anyone used paper lanterns outdoors and have any ideas? The Hilton quoted me $1500 to rent the lanterns and have them arrange the setup, but this sounds high to me.

Thanks for the help!

IMO that is ridiculously expensive. We used paper lanterns and brought our own. They come flat and you pop them up (well the ones we got did) so they didn't take up much room in the luggage. Perhaps you can look into it and see what they would charge you to just set them up, although they may not allow you to do that since they stand to gain $1500 by renting you the lanterns they already have. But wow, you could buy 100 lanterns and pay someone to hang them and take them down for a fraction of that price!

Hi Vinni, $1500 is insane. Granted, you'd definitely get a nice set up with the canopy and all (I HOPE!)...but I am paying a 10th of that to have 30 lanterns hung for me. Unfortunately, I have no clue where they'll be set up yet...but I will send you pics as soon as I get back from my wedding/honeymoon in a few weeks. When's your wedding?

On this subject but a little tangent- for those of you who did this... how many paper lanterns did you buy and bring with you? I'm defnitely going to do this but am not sure how many to use. Guess it depends on how big the space is but let me know your thoughts!!! THANKS!

Thanks I would love to see the pictures! Our wedding is July 13. Mostly, I am not sure how to set up the lanterns since the receptions is outside. There are a few trees to string them up on, but they are not very close together. I was mostly wondering where I could find pillars to hang the lights between.

  • 2 weeks later...

i am looking into the same thing and i think that is crazy you can get them for anywhere between 150 and 5 bucks for large ones then you have two options getting the stings with light bulbs that need to be plugged in or you can get each one there own battery operated light bulb/hanging device. i am leaning towards the battery op hanging device i have found them for as little as 1.50 or for good ones that last 12 hours like 3 or 4 bucks. my space is small so i only plan on having like maybe 20 so lets say $40 for the lanterns and $60 for the battery things=$100 plus whatever they would charge me to hang them which i cant see it being that much hope this helps!!!!

Hi Ladies...

I think the Hilton must have quoted these lanterns incorrectly (maybe in pesos?) Anyhow, my name is Karen and I work at a wedding coordinating company here in Los Cabos called Maye Cortinas and we rent the lanterns for $60 to set-up, plus $5 per lantern. There may also be a charge for the poles (if there are not enough palm trees). If anyone is interested, contact us at maye@mayecortinas.com or weddings@mayecortinas.com. Good luck!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
