I've gotten a response from Michael, Riu's Photographer

Recommended Posts

I know this has been previously discussed, but I just got an updated email, YESTERDAY, from Michael with these words in red:

Due to many missunderstandings so far :

Please note that no other professional photographer or videographer (neither from Jamaica nor any other part in the world) is allowed to work on the property due to the contract I have with RIU as a seperate company - every violation of this issue is not permitted and the outside photographers/videographers can & will be removed from the wedding site after identified. The hotel and the PHOTOSHOP are monitoring that closely together and some outside photographers/ videographers have already been removed. Pictures have been taken of them so that they are known as Professionals already

Has his contracts always stated this. I hope this isn't a new clause, because I may be using a photographer who is a close friend for the wedding.

That would be a reason to steer away from that resort IMHO -- if I wanted a certain type of photography. I am surprised the resort allows that much pull from a photographer.

A lot of us are bringing our own photographer. Michael told me it was going to be $150 to break the "contract", but my TA is going to get that waived.

I just had family/friends take pictures and the morning of our wedding, Michael's PhotoShop called to ask if we need services. I said that we were just having family and friends take pictures (which I had confirmed ok by Chandlyn via email). Then, the woman got kind of rude, threatening that it can't be any professionals or they will be removed. After all this, she then asked if she was speaking to the actual bride to confirm this. I have a feeling that it's more threats than action. When we were having our dinner at Mammee, he came up and w/out asking starting taking a few pics, putting us in these random poses. He then gave us his card to stop by and look/buy the pics, which we had no interest in doing. Whatever you do, I would have it confirmed via email by Chandlyn or Michael so there are no misunderstandings when you get down there. You don't need any stress on you day! Good luck!

They do that when you're just hanging on the beach so I can imagine that they really get you at a wedding!

What about if your photographer is your guest. Can they "remove" them from your wedding? This issue is stressing me out!!

I don't think that they can "remove" them if they are a guest staying at the resort or a professional within your family/friends. I'm guessing that is why pouchie didn't have any issues since her photographer stayed there for several days. Don't worry, just confirm with Chandlyn (and bring a copy of the confirmation with you) so you don't have to worry.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
