second guessing choice EDR - help - where is better

Recommended Posts

Ok

I booked EDR for Nov 2008.

We have been arguing with them as they are charging for every thing we want (outside photographer, outside dj, outside everything) and are in fact being quite rude (should note, I'm from Canada so we book different here and use a travel agent for a one week set date all inclusive). So, travel agent has been corresponding with them.

That, mixed with recent bad reviews on trip adviser, friends complaining that its a couple resort, and everything

I JUST am at my ends, and don't know what to do!

We have 30 booked. Travel Agent said we could change if we want.

Where would we go?

I liked the look of Royal Playa Del Carmen (spelling) sorry!

Any advice?

Hi - I know what you're going through b/c I went through it, too, when I first starting planning my wedding at EDR. I didn't experience the rudeness, though, but I did feel like we were being nickeled and dimed on everything and felt as though our hands were completely tied. I decided to stick w/ EDR b/c I had never heard one single bad review of an EDR wedding AFTER the couple returned - in fact, everyone (every single person) said how wonderful it had turned out. My travel agent (who loves EDR) has helped by keeping me calm and telling me that everything will work out perfectly for my wedding, too. And after I accepted that the wedding business is simply big business in which you have little room to negotiate (you do have a little, though), I relaxed. However, you need to do what's best for you - if you continue to feel stressed and uncomfortable about it, then look into other venues....it's not like there aren't a TON of terrific alternatives out there!

I'm so sorry to hear your frustration. Planning all this is quite stressful with getting everyone booked and makign sure you get what you want.

I'm getting married at Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa and couldn't be happier about my decision. The room prices are really reasonable and the wedding coordinator on site, Sandra, is so nice and helpful. I've heard past Dreams Tulum brides say that you basically show up, make your decisions, and Sandra takes care of by the time the ceremony takes place. I've read nothing but great things about her.

Hi Jennifer...I'm getting married the same day you are! The following day (the 24th) we are transfering to EDR for our honeymoon. Good luck with wedding planning!

BandE2008,

I am also getting married there in Nov and am feeling the same way. The WC only started being nice to me when she got my deposit and your right the most recent reviews are a little discouraging. My biggest complaint is that I do not qualify for the free wedding because I am 3 nights short, the next package is insane and I would never spend that much purchasing a la carte, but a las, can't have the wedding without a package. Hang in there and I wish you the best.

Jennifer

I am sorry you are having difficulties. If you do not feel happy or comfortable then you should definitely switch. However, I am getting married there and have not had any problems with rudeness. I am dealing with Valeria. Who are you dealing with? Maybe you need to speak with someone different. I do feel like there are alot of charges for little things but I think you are going to run into that everywhere. I do agree weddings are big business and that is one of the reasons we are even having a DW. Good luck!

Hi!

I got married at dreams cancun, but honeymooned at EDR.

As far as being nickeled and dimed, from what I've read on this forum, yes, EDR charges you for bringing in any outside vendors, there are a lot of resorts that do not charge you for this. We weren't charged anything additional from our resort for having an outside photographer.

About EDR being a couples resort, well, we were there on our honeymoon, and I would definetly say it does have a couples atmosphere, most of the people we met were there on their honeymoon. I was glad that we didn't get married there because I think it may have been a little to quiet for our guests, there really wasn't much going on at night, it got quiet around there pretty early, but that was okay because we were on our honeymoon and we could just hang out at the bar for awhile and relax and go back to our room.

If you're not happy with your choice and you can change maybe its worth looking into some other options, if nothing else you'll find that you chose the best place initially.

Hi there! So you're doing a mid-week wedding, as well! That's great! I hope your planning is going well, too! Just a bit more than three months to go! Yikes!

I too have had my freak outs with my EDR choice. One of my major concerns was that my single friends would be bored there. However, I know them and my FI's family, and wherever they are, that is where the party is! These people always seem to be having more fun than anyone else, so I am relying on them to provide my nightly entertainment! Also, I agree with Jennifer that the wedding reviews are always glowing!!!

I am obsessed with reading trip advisor reviews as well and still in my opinion the good reviews out number the bad ones. I like how EDR is close to the Cancun airport. That was one of the reasons I decided against Dreams Tulum. Also, I don't think the beaches are that great right now in Playa del Carmen because of Hurricane Dean.

We decided to get married in Mexico because we just wanted a simple and casual affair and have the resort take care of everything. We really just want to show up and never have to deal with speaking with vendors. Had I wanted more specifics, I understand how difficult EDR would make it for you.

Have you done a site visit? We are unable to do one, but perhaps if you go there for a couple of days that may help you fall in the love with the place or help you make your decision to switch.

One year after our 11-2007 date... nice, great time to be there and affordable for sure.

Without a doubt, this resort is not amenable to bringing in outside vendors. We ended up putting up our photographer, which would have made more sense even at another resort. We had our own DJ and didn't see a need for any other outside vendors. If you have your heart set on lots of outside stuff, it may be better to look around. On the other hand, I can tell you that we let them do pretty much everything, and it turned out nearly perfect!

I can't imagine what could be contained in a bad review from a REASONABLE person. We had 52 total people there, and the complaints were negligible and always remedied within minutes by the staff there! After being there, I truly believe that almost all of the bad reviews come from UNREASONABLE people!

True, there are tons of couples there. But we had single guests that still managed to have a great time. Depending how many people you have, you will create your own party! Our group was large enough to turn the swing bar into a party every time we showed up. Some of the single people went out at night, into Cancun or Playa, but they said they really had a better time back at the resort hanging out with all of the wedding guests and drinking for free!!!

As for your friends/guests complaining, you need to get over that. It's your day. Do what you want to do! If they complain, tell them they don't have to come. It's not your job to please everyone on your wedding day!

If you feel that you need to, I'm certainly not going to talk you out of it. BUT, I can't imagine we could have had a better wedding anywhere else!

Tough it out. Let them know that you aren't very happy right now. Change coordinators if you need to. We loved Valeria! Be persistent on getting what you want, and keep good records (advice for any DW...) All the hard work and planning you put in now will make each of the days there that much more priceless!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!

I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else.
